Actors Ryu Jin, Hwang Dong-joo and Gong Jung-hwan are set to showcase three distinct charms to viewers with a "parentage scandal" that will shake weekday nights.
The new KBS 1TV daytime drama Marie and Her Three Daddies (directed by Seo Yong-soo, written by Kim Hong-joo), set to premiere on the 13th, is a drama about Mari's chaotic quest to find her father! It depicts the birth of an unusual family whose bonds are stronger than blood and more persistent than sperm.
Ryu Jin, Hwang Dong-joo and Gong Jung-hwan play Mari's three father candidates, Lee Poong-joo, Kang Min-bo and Jin Gi-sik, respectively. They compete fiercely over daughter Kang Mari (played by Ha Seung-ri), promising to deliver laughter and emotion to viewers. With hints of bickering rival chemistry raising curiosity about the series, Ryu Jin, Hwang Dong-joo and Gong Jung-hwan shared their thoughts and determination about the project.
First, Ryu Jin, who plays the cold and prickly Lee Poong-joo, director of the hematology-oncology department at Eom Hospital, said he chose the project because, "I was curious how Poong-joo, who is faithful to principles and reason, would react when he learns an unexpected fact and how the process of resolving it would be portrayed." He added with a laugh, "In real life I only have two sons, but when I heard (about Marie and Her Three Daddies) that I would have a daughter, I decided without asking any questions."
Regarding Poong-joo's charm, Ryu Jin pointed to "a prickly exterior but a warm side underneath," and said he plans to mix in flexible aspects to portray the character. He said, "I'm very curious to see how his endlessly logical and rational demeanor at the hospital will change," raising expectations for Poong-joo's transformation.
Next, Hwang Dong-joo, who plays Kang Min-bo, Mari's legal father and a famous painter, expressed his affection for Marie and Her Three Daddies, calling it "a work that allows you to deeply think about what family means." To portray Min-bo's honest-yet-gentle emotional expression, he said, "I changed my speech and the way I express emotions. It will be enjoyable to watch," expressing confidence.
Hwang Dong-joo also praised the chemistry with the other actors. He said, "Except for Gong Jung-hwan, I'm meeting everyone for the first time, but they are such excellent actors that we've been filming enthusiastically like partners who have worked together for a long time since the first shoot," adding, "The set is so comfortable and fun that we get retakes from laughing," boasting of their perfect rapport.
Gong Jung-hwan, who plays Jin Gi-sik, Poong-joo's rival and the son-in-law of Eom Hospital's director, said, "I wanted to do warm, hearty and fun acting, and when I heard about Marie and Her Three Daddies, I joined," adding, "Unlike my previous work, I'm thinking a lot about showing a more cheerful performance."
Defining the role of "Gi-sik" as "a friend with low self-esteem who always wants to be recognized," Gong Jung-hwan said, "His attempts to be acknowledged will appear pitiable and cute in the drama. That aspect will enrich the character of Gi-sik." Citing inferiority complex, paternal affection and ambition as keywords for expressing Gi-sik, he hinted that "many things will happen (because of this)," teasing a variety of unfolding events and raising curiosity about Marie and Her Three Daddies.
Finally, Ryu Jin emphasized, "Don't distinguish between relationships such as biological and raised affection; if you watch with your heart, you will probably feel something warm." Hwang Dong-joo also said, "As the drama unfolds, it will be an opportunity for viewers to think together about 'what family is,'" and added, "We will show everything: laughter, emotion and love. Please tune in for the premiere." Gong Jung-hwan also asked prospective viewers for their enthusiastic support for Marie and Her Three Daddies, saying, "We will tell comfortable, fun and cheerful stories every evening."
