Sungmin, a former Super Junior singer, revealed his feelings regarding the malicious comments that poured in after his dating and marriage.
Sungmin appeared on a special broadcast of KBS2's 'The Return of Superman' that aired on the afternoon of the 7th. While active as a member of the idol group and enjoying peak popularity, Sungmin choked up as he recounted that after choosing to date and marry he was swept up in numerous rumors and was unable to work for 10 years.
Sungmin said, "I have never once poured out my true feelings to those around me. Because I was the first idol to get married, at first I worried how to tell fans because I thought they would be surprised, but once rumors and articles came out I couldn't respond. As the rumors grew and I saw countless malicious comments, I felt like people were insulting me and looking at me negatively, so I couldn't say anything and stayed at home. I had nothing I could do besides being a singer, and I became afraid that I was losing my place."
Afterward, Sungmin said he chose to marry to protect his wife Kim Sa-eun, but he revealed his remorse that he spent a long 10-year blank period unable to work while his wife became the breadwinner and supported the family, and Kim Sa-eun in turn showed consideration for Sungmin, saying, "My husband must have had a harder time than I did. I feel sorry and upset that I caused him harm."
Sungmin, seeing his son Doyoon who miraculously arrived 10 years after his marriage, prepared for a new leap as a trot singer. To quench his thirst for the stage he transformed into a trot singer, but after failing to achieve good results when appearing on competition shows, Sungmin sought out trot composer Lee Ho-seop's singing class to learn from the basics and, after four years of training, reemerged as a devoted protégé.
After finishing his singing lessons, Sungmin returned home and showed he was doing his best preparing for a 'National Singing Contest' stage scheduled a few days later, and he also showed his skillful father side by spending time with Doyoon, preparing baby food himself and feeding him.
A few days later, performing on the 'National Singing Contest' stage as a rookie trot singer, Sungmin received advice from Nam Hee-seok to always approach things with sincerity and sang his heart out for a fan who supported him even in heavy rain.
Taking the stage for his son and wife, Sungmin said, "I hope the day comes when Doyoon grows up strong and sees my stage and says I'm cool. Although I'm a 20-year veteran singer, I'm a rookie trot singer starting anew. I hope people won't hate me too much, look on me kindly and give me a lot of love," expressing his resolve for the future.
