Attorney and broadcaster Seo Dong-joo revealed a distinctive conviction while choosing gifts for both families ahead of Chuseok.
On the 6th, a new video titled "First holiday daughter-in-law Seo Dong-joo buys 1,000,000 won worth of gifts for both families" was posted on Seo Dong-joo's YouTube channel "Seo Dong-joo's Tto.Do.Dong."
That day Seo Dong-joo stopped by a department store to look at gifts to give to both sets of parents. First, to pick a gift for her in-laws she moved to the basement and said, "Mother-in-law prefers more traditional things, so she might like a Korean beef set, a snack set, or traditional tea. On the way here I called my husband and he said, 'Mom will like whatever you give her,'"
She added, "I don't know. I haven't figured out my mother-in-law's taste, but it seems different from my mom's," and said, "When I give gifts to elders, I think packaging is important, so I want to give things that look neatly packaged and gift-like."
The production team asked how much she was thinking of spending, and Seo Dong-joo said, "Mother-in-law 500,000 won, mom 500,000 won," adding, "It's the best amount I can do right now. I act like there's no tomorrow."
Regarding her gift criteria she said, "Personally there are many things I don't eat, and I have an elementary-school-level palate, so I strictly exclude my tastes. I try to give what the other person likes. So my mother has always said she likes that I pick gifts well. As a compliment she says, 'You're unfashionable, but you pick gifts well.' My taste is that I like somewhat unfashionable things."
Then Seo Dong-joo headed to the coffee machine brand she had received as a wedding gift and sampled brewed coffee. She said, "I need to talk with my husband. But if I give my mother-in-law a 700,000 won item? Then I have to give my mother a 700,000 won item too. Fairly."
When the production team asked, "Is this your couple philosophy?", Seo Dong-joo said, "It's my philosophy. My husband actually says even if there's a price difference we should give what each person likes, but I'm somewhat uncomfortable. If I don't match the amounts between families I'm uncomfortable. But my husband says each has their own taste so don't worry about it."
Continuing her 고민, Seo Dong-joo moved to the basement food section and looked at fruit sets and Korean beef sets. She was especially interested when she saw eco-friendly products, and at that time she chose an eco-friendly Korean beef set worth 500,000 won. Seo Dong-joo said, "In a way this is my first holiday gift to my mother-in-law. I always gave allowance while she ate delicious food, but this time I thought what if I gave a modified gift. Seeing the world for the first time, everyone was living luxuriously."
She had chosen a Korean beef set to give to her in-laws, but she still had not picked a gift for her birth mother, Seo Jeong-hee. In the end Seo Dong-joo called Seo Jeong-hee, and when she said she wanted meat, Seo Dong-joo ordered the same meat set she had bought for her in-laws. Having spent a total of 1,000,000 won, Seo Dong-joo smiled as the gifts were taken care of.
Meanwhile, Seo Dong-joo married a non-celebrity man five years her junior on June 5. Seo Dong-joo's husband is known to be a director at the company where broadcaster Jang Seong-gyu, a former announcer, is affiliated.
