I can't escape the strange and beautiful charm of Suzy.
Genie, Make A Wish, which was released on the 3rd, is a stress-free fantasy romantic comedy in which a career-interrupted lamp spirit, Genie (played by Kim Woo-bin), who woke up after about a thousand years, meets an emotionally deficient human, Ga-young (played by Suzy), and engages in events over three wishes. Genie and Ga-young, whose long narrative spans past and present lives, have captivated viewers with a story of two characters full of excitement, laughter and poignancy as soon as the work was released.
In the drama, Suzy plays Ga-young, who has antisocial personality disorder. She is a character raised by her grandmother and lives by her grandmother's drill-like "rules" and "routines." Although called a "psychopath," she can also be described as a very rare character that implies "the human's good will." Ga-young shows no expression even in unreal situations and is unresponsive to the sweet temptation of granting three wishes. After meeting Genie, she climbs to the top of an observatory and, seeming to take an interest in death, the strange smile she shows as "real joy" when she says "an opportunity has come" gives a chilling and alien feeling as if she is about to do something. But Ga-young tries to take what others say at face value, gets along well with the villagers who raised her with love, and always keeps her promises. Suzy has created a complex character in which good and evil coexist, making her someone viewers cannot easily hate and a very attractive character.
Suzy's status as the undisputed rom-com queen also stood out. The chemistry with Kim Woo-bin, marking a reunion after nine years, exploded with excitement and kept viewers smiling throughout. Ga-young, who bickers with Genie whenever they meet and sometimes uses violence on the genie who is annoyingly obsessed with wishes, becomes cute when she falls for the charm of a kiss and waits only for the rules and routines set by Genie, adding to the fun of the drama. Though Ga-young shows no expression, Suzy's delicate acting conveyed the excitement and interest intact. Above all, she delivered even the fantastical lines with flavor, making viewers want to watch the same scene again.
Because the character lacks emotion, it can be difficult to convey what the character feels through appearance alone, but Suzy's efforts shone and allowed viewers to be fully charged with the character's emotions. This is the charm of the characters Suzy has presented so far; she is an actor who has the knack of making audiences want to root for and embrace every character she creates. The reason viewers can even come to love the character's rough edges is that Suzy's detailed character analysis was well ingrained in the performance. Suzy's effort to become the character herself in each work and deepen the emotional depth was more than enough to raise immersion.
Above all, in this work, which features many characters, Suzy shows fresh chemistry with every character she meets. From moving between past and present lives to portraying completely different personalities, Suzy's colorful and dazzling charm can be seen in the Netflix series Genie, Make A Wish.
