Director Kang Yoon-sung of the film "The In-Between World" revealed behind-the-scenes stories of using AI.
On the 7th, the team behind the film "The In-Between World" (screenplay/director Kang Yoon-sung, AI direction Kwon Han-seul, planning/production Four Entertainment, co-planning KT, distribution CJ CGV) released a commentary video.
"The In-Between World" is a chase action blockbuster about people trapped in the "in-between world" between the living world and the afterlife and the grim reapers who try to annihilate their souls.
The commentary video released this time is content that directly explains the production process and the worldbuilding of a feature film produced using generative AI, the first of its kind in Korea, and it both answers prospective viewers' questions and heightens expectations. Led by director Kang Yoon-sung, actors Byun Yo-han and Bang Hyo-rin, and Kwon Han-seul, an AI director who plays a leading role in Korea's AI creative field, joined to deliver an even richer story. AI director Kwon Han-seul designed a total of 18 creature types including the grim reapers appearing in "The In-Between World" and the action sequences, promising to deliver intense visual pleasure to audiences.
The commentary video, which looks at major scenes from the film while revealing behind-the-scenes stories from the shoot and the process of using AI technology, also adds to the viewing pleasure by providing explanations of key scenes. In particular, the segment introducing the production process of scenes realized through generative AI is undeniably interesting. Alongside the behind-the-scenes detail that numerous experts must meticulously design dozens of prompts for a single scene, viewers can feel that current AI technology has reached a level applicable to commercial films.
The segment introducing the shoot that used AI is also interesting. Without AI, actors would typically shoot on sets with green screens installed, but "The In-Between World" was special. Actors could perform outdoors where the story is set, allowing for a real sense of presence. In addition, as Byun Yo-han mentioned, rehearsals that thoroughly calculated time to utilize AI played a major role in raising the film's level of completion.
The ending of the video is also notable. In the final scene, it is handled without actual footage, using only captions and the actors' exclamations, stimulating the audience's imagination. Here, when an actor asked, "Can we do this, director?" director Kang Yoon-sung answered in a confident voice, "Yes, you can," which sharply raises expectations for the world that "The In-Between World" will show. It opens on Oct. 15.
