Disney+'s first original historical drama series "The Murky Stream" has been receiving daily praise since episodes 4 and 5 were released on the 3rd (Fri), firmly establishing itself as a perfect work for the whole family to enjoy during the Chuseok holiday.
In the released episodes 4 and 5, the deepened relationships between characters and the depiction of a corrupt era portrayed even more mercurial characters, increasing viewers' immersion. In particular, the scene showing "Si-yul" (Rowoon) becoming a member of the ruffian group he had despised and reborn as a family with the Mu-deok gang was included, raising curiosity about what fate "Si-yul" will follow next.
Meanwhile, "Jeong-cheon" (Park Seo-ham), who had been tracking "Si-yul"'s whereabouts, learns from "Choi Eun" (Shin Ye Eun), whom he meets by chance, about the atrocities "Si-yul" committed at the Choi family trading company and is shocked. He firmly says, "If someone is going to starve to death, so be it, but I am not someone who would throw punches," yet Choi Eun, having witnessed two people she had embraced in the mourning procession, concludes they are of the same gang and leaves. In this way, episode 4 raised tension as the three characters' misunderstandings and confusion intersected, increasing curiosity about how the tangled relationships will be resolved in the future.
While episodes 1–3 depicted explanations of the ruffians' worldview and each character's backstory, episodes 4–5 dealt with the stories of characters facing a new phase, with a fast-paced development that raised anticipation for the next episode.
"Si-yul" delivered exceptional suspense to viewers by engaging in a showdown with Umji "Deok-gae" (Choi Young-woo). Thanks to "Si-yul"'s actions, "Mu-deok" becomes the umji of the Mapo ferry landing. Beyond saving the gang members, "Si-yul" declares he will protect "Mu-deok," saying, "You promised. The promise not to run away," and "Why don't we try living among ourselves?" He revealed deep friendship and familial love with the ruffians, completing a poignant narrative.
Having inherited the umji position of the Mapo ferry landing from "Deok-gae," "Mu-deok" becomes the new umji. Although he is often ridiculed by other gang leaders, a scene shows him solidifying his position as he receives greetings from "Gang Haeng-su" (Jeon Bae-soo) and "Choi Eun" in accordance with custom. However, the triumphant moment is short-lived; the atmosphere is instantly overturned when "Jeong-cheon" appears with the shout, "Detain them all! Don't let a single one escape!" Immediately after becoming umji, "Mu-deok" and the ruffians face the threat of being dragged to the government office, "Jeong-cheon" encounters "Si-yul" in the ruffians' den, and it is revealed that the origin of all this was the intention of "Dae-ho-gun" (Choi Won-young), heightening expectations for the story to come.
"Mu-deok," striving to keep his place as the new umji, and "Si-yul," who alongside him seeks his own way by integrating into the ruffian world. "Choi Eun" and "Jeong-cheon," who do not back down in the face of injustice. When each person's path and convictions collide, the characters' fates in The Murky Stream are drawn into a greater whirlwind, and anticipation for where they will head next grows even stronger.
