The film Face (written and directed by Yeon Sang-ho, produced by Wowpoint (WOWPOINT), co-distributed by Plus M Entertainment), which has received overwhelming praise as the return of the "primordial Yeonniverse," has surpassed 1 million viewers, continuing a meaningful box office run.
Since its release, Face, which has sustained positive reviews and word of mouth, reached 1,000,005 cumulative viewers as of 6:51 p.m. on Oct. 5, according to the integrated computer network for movie admissions, finally achieving the milestone of surpassing 1 million viewers.
This result was achieved amid the many competing releases during the Chuseok holiday, and it draws attention as a valuable outcome of director Yeon Sang-ho's meaningful challenge. In addition, heavy praise and solid craftsmanship, along with stellar performances by Korea's representative "faces" of film—Park Jeong-min, Kwon Hae-hyo, Shin Hyun-bin, Im Seong-jae and Han Ji-hyun—created a perfect synergy that produced reviews such as "Yeon Sang-ho shows the depths of human ugliness, and actors with insane acting skills came together to create a masterpiece. It was the best film I've seen this year." (CGV ha***), "All the actors' performances were insane the whole time I was watching, I just sat with my mouth open." (CGV Park Jeong***), "One of the best-made films I've seen in the last five years." (CGV Blue**), "I can't help but write a review." (Naver rew2***), "The acting is ferocious… Yeon Sang-ho's form is crazy." (Naver ener****). Such weighty messages and strong artistry have led to praise calling it "this year's film," and word of mouth continues, so Face's box office momentum is expected to continue.
The leading cast of Face delivered a message of thanks to commemorate the 1 million viewers. Yeon Sang-ho and Park Jeong-min, Kwon Hae-hyo, Shin Hyun-bin, Im Seong-jae and Han Ji-hyun each conveyed messages written carefully in their own handwriting, and they will also offer direct thanks through stage greetings held during the Chuseok holiday period.
Face, which achieved the significant milestone of 1 million viewers, tells the story of Im Young-gyu, who, though blind, has become a master in the seal carving field, and his son Im Dong-hwan, who together unravel the mystery surrounding the death of the mother that had been buried for 40 years. The production was made on an ultra-low budget of 200 million won with lead actors participating without guarantees, and after surpassing 1 million viewers its cumulative box office exceeded 10.2 billion won.
