Lee Young-ae and Kim Young-kwang were once again pushed to the brink, heightening the drama's tension to a peak.
Episode 5 of the KBS 2TV weekend miniseries Walking On Thin Ice, broadcast on the 4th, saw Kang Eun-soo (Lee Young-ae) and Lee Kyung (Kim Young-kwang) face a shocking ending in which their lives were threatened by attackers. Episode 5 recorded a 5.1% viewership rating (Nielsen Korea, nationwide households), breaking its own record for highest rating and fueling an upward trend. In particular, the scene revealing that Eun-soo's daughter Su-ah (Kim Si-a), who was implicated in the theft of class funds, was not the thief, surged to a peak minute rating of 5.7%.
In the episode, Jang Tae-gu (Park Yong-woo) visited Eun-soo and relentlessly questioned her about James's whereabouts. Eun-soo lied that she met James while working part time at Medusa, but Tae-gu pressed her using call records from James's burner phone as evidence. Momentarily flustered, Eun-soo calmly dodged the crisis, and Kyung-do (Kwon Ji-woo) intensified anxiety by discovering something in a pillow while searching Eun-soo's room.
Tae-gu's persistent investigation and daughter Su-ah's (Kim Si-a) pointed question weighed heavily on Eun-soo's mind. When her daughter asked, "The person the police are looking for. James is a bad person, right?" Eun-soo forced a smile but was seized by guilt and fear. Lee Young-ae raised the drama's immersion with delicate emotional acting that alternated between an unwavering smile and inner anxiety.
Lee Kyung secretly recorded a significant conversation in which Hwi-rim (Do Sang-woo) confessed to a past involvement in an incident during their meeting. It raised questions about whether Kyung had deliberately approached Hwi-rim for that reason and what connections there might be to Hwi-rim's hidden past.
Meanwhile, Dong-hyun (Lee Gyu-seong), who had been colluding with the suspicious figure "Donbeolrae," was shocked after receiving a tip that a bag of drugs was at Eun-soo's house. Above all, because that house had been where Eun-soo had sincerely congratulated him on getting a job and even prepared side dishes for him, treating him humanely, Dong-hyun's internal conflict deepened.
Eun-soo and Lee Kyung attended Su-ah's art contest award celebration together. But Kyung noticed a family dining at a nearby table and then encountered older brother Lee-hyuk (Kim Dong-won) in the restroom. Kyung revealed his feelings, asking, "How long are you going to keep doing this? It's been 10 years. You still try to make up for that time even now…" but Lee-hyuk slapped him and shouted, "Is that something you can make up for? For what you did?" The story of why Kyung was shunned by his family for 10 years and how it may relate to Hwi-rim's past incident deepened the mystery.
At the end of the broadcast, after Lee Kyung took a drunken Eun-soo home, he revealed honest feelings he had not expressed before. When Eun-soo showed a determined resolve, saying, "I want to kill them all. I want to make sure no one can touch me," Kyung suggested they continue as partners. At that moment, masked assailants barged in, put black bags over both their faces and threatened them, delivering a shocking ending that instantly filled living rooms with extreme fear.
Viewers who watched the broadcast reacted strongly, saying, "Lee Young-ae and Park Yong-woo have great chemistry. The psychological warfare is so tense," "The detectives' characters are meticulous and realistic," "Kim Young-kwang made a good choice with this role. He really is like James," "Oh no. My husband saw Eun-soo and Lee Kyung together, he'll misunderstand," "The youngest cop gets an award," "The imagined happy scenes for Eun-soo are sad. Lee Young-ae acts so well," "What happened to Lee Kyung?" and "The ending is epic. Wow, to jump out from there," among other heated responses.
In this way, Walking On Thin Ice choked living rooms as Eun-soo, consumed by desire, and Kyung, who gradually revealed his inner self, became entangled with his story of being shunned even by his family.
