Netflix's eagerly released drama "Genie, Make A Wish" rose to No. 1 on the "Today Korea Top 10 Series" chart one day after its release.
Genie, Make A Wish, whose entire season was released on the 3rd, is a fantasy romantic comedy about Genie (Kim Woo-bin), the lamp spirit who wakes after about a thousand years, and Ga-young (Suzy), a human who has lost her emotions, as they unfold three wishes. The Kim Woo-bin–Suzy pairing, reunited for the first time since "Uncontrollably Fond," completed a strong, distinctive lineup with the additions of Ahn Eun-jin, Noh Sang-hyun, Go Gyu-pil and Lee Joo-young.
On top of that, star-studded cameos such as Song Hye-kyo and Daniel Henney drew attention. In particular, Song Hye-kyo attracted attention with her first special appearance because of her connection with writer Kim Eun-sook, and Daniel Henney also elicited cheers from viewers by briefly showing his presence in the drama.
Especially since it was writer Kim Eun-sook's new work and the reunion of Kim Woo-bin and Suzy after nine years, viewers' attention was immediately drawn to the series after its release.
Reactions were mixed. Negative reviews such as "too childish" and "more disappointing than expected" coexisted with praise like "perfect for killing time" and "Suzy's charm stands out." Some pointed to the exaggerated tone of the dialogue, while other viewers enjoyed writer Kim Eun-sook's distinctive lines and fantasy worldview as they are.
Nevertheless, the work proved its popularity and box office potential by taking the top spot in Korea as soon as it was released. Amid expectations and disappointments, attention is on what kind of word-of-mouth "Genie, Make A Wish" will generate starting from the Chuseok holiday.
