SBS 'The Secretaries' made a spectacular start, scoring a big hit from its first broadcast.
According to Nielsen Korea, the SBS show that aired on the 3rd, SBS 'My Manager Who's Too Harsh for Me - The Secretaries' (hereafter 'The Secretaries'), posted a household rating of 5.4% (Seoul metropolitan area) and a 2049 target rating of 1.5%, topping all public affairs, variety and drama programs airing at the same time to rank first overall. The peak minute rating climbed to 6.7%, the highest among first-episode ratings for new SBS variety shows aired this year.
Before starting full manager activities that day, Lee Seo-jin and Kim Kwang-kyu received a manual from Lee Su-ji's actual manager. It contained unusual requests emphasizing food supply as the top priority, bringing finger foods and a hand fan, and even checking white tongue coating and armpit sweat. After reading it, Lee Seo-jin abruptly asked Lee Su-ji, "Does white tongue coating happen often?" which embarrassed her. Lee Su-ji replied, "I only eat candy when I shoot commercials," and joked, "I'll check it. If you talk about white tongue coating, won't everyone only talk about my white tongue coating?" prompting laughter.
The most talked-about scene that day was the soondae guk mukbang in the car. Choosing soondae guk for lunch, Lee Su-ji ate in the moving vehicle with a takeout container spread out. Seeing that, Lee Seo-jin said, "I think eating soondae guk in a car is a stunt parade. Eating soondae guk in a car is unimaginable," expressing astonishment. When Lee Su-ji asked, "Could you please drink some of the soup?" because it looked likely to spill, Lee Seo-jin even offered a "soup-servicing" gesture by sipping the soup himself, adding to the laughter. In an interview he joked, "Only the scallions came in, not the meat," which drew big laughs.
A coffee episode on the way to the hair salon also drew attention. When Lee Su-ji requested a decaf iced latte, Kim Kwang-kyu ran off to buy the coffee himself. Seeing him return drenched in sweat, Lee Su-ji said, "It feels like I made my parents run an errand," and felt embarrassed. Still, Lee Seo-jin handed over the coffee, prompting Kim Kwang-kyu to complain, "I ran and sweated for this and you give it to her?" which provoked more laughter.
During filming of their own content that followed, the generational gap was laid bare. Transforming into his alter ego "Hambugi," Lee Su-ji passionately explained her world view and performed a rap, but Lee Seo-jin looked puzzled, asking, "Is body the weapon?" and Kim Kwang-kyu, attempting excessive camera movement, was told, "That's an old style." Feeling frustrated, Lee Su-ji said, "It feels like a teacher scolding you in the faculty office. Like, 'Why did your grades come out like this?'" voicing her displeasure and prompting laughs.
At a wrap-up dinner that ended the day, Lee Seo-jin encouraged Lee Su-ji, saying, "You shoot a lot of commercials these days, congratulations. You're a top star." Lee Su-ji candidly admitted, "I know this will end, so I'm trying to make the most of this time. I know there's an expiration date." Lee Seo-jin offered sincere advice, "Because you've built up a lot over time, you can endure. If people who haven't built anything suddenly become successful, various problems arise," creating a warm atmosphere.
Meanwhile, SBS 'The Secretaries' will air from episode 2 every Friday at 11:10 p.m. Actor Uhm Ji-won is scheduled to appear as the second "My star," drawing attention.<
