"Hyungsuda" season 2 covers a kidnapping case that shocked Korea after a teacher gaslighted a student into committing kidnapping and murder.
Episode 11 of E Channel's original web variety show "Hyungsuda" season 2 (hereinafter "Hyungsuda 2"), which will be released on the YouTube channel "Detectives' Chat" on the 3rd, features former judge-turned-lawyer Jeong Jae-min and singer Jeon Hyo-seong as guests.
This episode is a "death row conversation" episode about South Korean death row inmates whose death sentences were actually carried out, and it focuses on the Ju Young-hyung case that shocked the entire nation in the 1980s.
The case began with an urgent kidnapping report. The victim child was Yoon Sang, who had difficulty moving because of childhood polio but grew up as a model student. He disappeared after running an errand at a bookstore in front of his house, and a threatening phone call came soon after. The caller, who said they were a four-person kidnapping group released from prison, threatened, "Prepare 40 million won." They tightened pressure on the parents through calls and letters and even made Yoon Sang's sister bring the money herself. During the investigation, circumstances emerged suggesting they had tried to abduct the sister.
On the 106th day of his disappearance, wanted posters were distributed nationwide, and the parents wrote a plea to the perpetrator and published it in newspapers. As the nation focused on the case, it was confirmed that Yoon Sang had planned to meet his middle school physical education teacher that day. The teacher, who arrived late at the meeting place, testified that because Yoon Sang was not there he went to attend a graduate school class. The investigation team examined about 700 people around the parents and some 16,000 ex-convicts and potential offenders, but found no suspects. Fingerprints from the threatening letters were also obtained, but none matched those under investigation.
A year after the disappearance, the investigation team brought in a famous Japanese hypnotist to draw out memories of that day, and a decisive clue was captured during the process. The perpetrator turned out to be Ju Young-hyung, whose identity was revealed to be the physical education teacher. Ju had a past of committing sex crimes against dozens of female students and leaving the school, and in this case it was revealed he involved his former students, high school girls, which made the case even more shocking. Lawyer Jeong Jae-min said of Ju Young-hyung's actions, "He seems the most devilish of any offender I've seen." Profiler Kwon Il-yong analyzed, "A criminal who displays the most typical psychopathic traits." Jeon Hyo-seong also expressed disbelief at a teacher committing crimes against students, saying, "It seems insane."
In fact, Ju Young-hyung calmly went to school and even gave interviews expressing concern for Yoon Sang while the nation was in turmoil over the disappearance. Jeon Hyo-seong lamented the teacher's atrocities against students, calling them "too brutal."
His true nature was revealed through examinations such as a polygraph test, and his continued evasion of responsibility provoked anger. "Hyungsuda 2" illuminates the full horror of a crime that shook an era through ruthless kidnapping and murder, the relentless investigation that brought the perpetrator to court, and the gaslighting of students.
Meanwhile, as the true crime genre that deals with real criminal cases has gained global popularity, "Hyungsuda 2" introduced AI dubbing for international viewers. From episode 3 it has been dubbed in four languages — English, Spanish, Japanese and Vietnamese — and full-episode dubbing is planned, making "Hyungsuda 2" easily accessible to global viewers.
"Hyungsuda 2" can be watched every Friday at 7 p.m. on the YouTube channel "Detectives' Chat".<
