Comedian Kim Won-hoon from You Quiz on the Block, chef Lu Ching Lai, and delivery worker Jeong Sang-bin, famous as a delivery driver, recalled their pasts when they were absorbed in achieving success.
On the 1st episode of tvN You Quiz on the Block (hereafter You Quiz), comedian Kim Won-hoon, chef Lu Ching Lai, and delivery worker Jeong Sang-bin appeared. Chef Lu Ching Lai marked his 50th year since entering Chinese cuisine this year, making it even more special.
Yoo Jae-suk said, "He currently holds many roles. He is in charge of a hotel Chinese restaurant, an advisory role for a sauce brand with 137 years of tradition, one of the top 100 masters, and the president of the Korea Chinese Cuisine Association," noting Lu Ching Lai's career.
Lu Ching Lai said, "I entered in Aug. 15, 1975. I was 15 and knew nothing about Chinese cuisine. Young people these days have ambitions and say 'I will do this work,' but my father died early and my mother had only graduated middle school, so I didn't even know well what it meant to learn a trade. The word Chinese restaurant was even unfamiliar," and he smiled sheepishly.
Lu Ching Lai said, "I witnessed my father's death. I was five, when he was farming garlic chives. He went with me to the theater, and as he came back across the street to load the chives, he was hit by a car. I saw that and said, 'Dad is dead,'" recounting the sad story that changed his life.
Comedian Kim Won-hoon said he could not forget Yoo Jae-suk's greeting from when he was an unknown rookie. Kim Won-hoon said, "I first met Yoo Jae-suk at the 2015 Entertainment Awards. I really had nothing then, I was doing just one corner. But I remember Yoo Jae-suk saying, 'Won-hoon, I'm watching you,' and even though I was a rookie and not doing a huge corner, him remembering me was so incredible," and he said Yoo Jae-suk's kindness made him treat juniors well.
Yoo Jae-suk said, "I laid a money cushion for my parents," mentioning his junior's success. Kim Won-hoon smiled sheepishly and said, "I laid down 10 million won in the living room for them."
Kim Won-hoon continued, "I had a dream that when I was with my parents someone would come up and recognize me. After I did well with short-form content, my father made a reservation in the middle of a shabu-shabu restaurant," mentioning his father's desire to show off his son.
Jeong Sang-bin, who earned 300 million won at age 26 as a delivery worker, shared his own method of "memorizing addresses." Yoo Jae-suk worried, "Aren't you missing work because you're appearing today?" and Jeong Sang-bin said, "Fortunately today is my day off."
Yoo Jae-suk marveled, "He saved 300 million won over six years just from delivery, so he looks like a legend in the industry."
Jeong Sang-bin said, "I made it into the top 1 percent. Other drivers ask for my know-how, so I tell them," and he said he purposely visited his assigned area on his days off to memorize every corner. He said, "At first I was on a monthly salary of 1.9 million won regardless of delivery volume. It was six days a week. Then when I moved to the next delivery company I was paid per package. I ran as much as possible to increase the count. I learned the delivery area in advance on days off. I took lefts and rights to go faster," surprising everyone.
