A broadcaster and former basketball player, Hyun Joo-yeop, has been partially cleared of abuse-of-power allegations.
According to legal circles, on the 1st the Civil Division 12 of the Seoul Western District Court ruled partially in favor of Hyun Joo-yeop in his defamation correction and damages lawsuit against MBC.
The court ordered MBC's True Story to issue a correction for raising allegations of abuse of power and negligence in duty against Hyun Joo-yeop. The court ordered that the correction notice be displayed on the first screen of the first broadcast of True Story after the ruling is finalized and that the host read it aloud. It also ordered MBC to pay Hyun Joo-yeop 15 million won.
True Story reported in March last year that Hyun Joo-yeop, who was the coach of the Whimun High School basketball team, neglected his duties because of outside schedules such as TV shoot commitments. It also raised allegations of abusive behavior and verbal abuse.
In response, Hyun Joo-yeop denied most of the allegations raised by True Story and in July of the same year filed a defamation correction and damages suit against MBC seeking 450 million won.
Meanwhile, MBC is reportedly considering whether to appeal. Hyun Joo-yeop has been preparing a comeback recently by running a YouTube channel and other activities.
