SBS' Kkokkomu addresses the case in which Kim Gil-tae, who raped and killed a 13-year-old girl, claimed "I couldn't have done that" and received a reduced sentence due to diminished responsibility, and raises questions about the recent string of diminished responsibility claims.
Today (2nd)'s episode of Story of the Day When You Bite Your Tail (directed by Lee Keun-byeol, Lee Dong-won, Kim Byung-gil, hereafter "Kkokkomu") 195, titled "Kim Gil-tae and the dark great king," features actors Jo Woo-jin, Shin So-yul and Kim Ki-bang as listeners and probes the notorious murderer Kim Gil-tae, who raped and killed a girl and disposed of her body in a boiler water tank.
In 2010, the body of a missing 13-year-old girl was found in a boiler water tank, shocking the Busan area. DNA of Kim Gil-tae was detected on the body, but the apprehended Kim Gil-tae denied responsibility, saying things like "I couldn't have done that" and "I was drunk so I don't remember." When he even uttered the bizarre line "I am being consumed by the dark great king," Shin So-yul could not contain her anger and sighed heavily, saying, "This is maddening, maddening." Kim Gil-tae also claimed mitigation by citing psychiatric treatment records and diminished responsibility, prompting Shin So-yul, who heard the account, to shout, "Absolutely not."
As it emerged that not only the Kim Gil-tae case but also the Jeong You-jeong case, the Incheon priest firearm case and the killing of an elementary school student by teacher Myung Jae-wan involved perpetrators who also claimed diminished responsibility, Jo Woo-jin vented, "I wonder whom these rulings serve," and Kim Ki-bang could not hide his bitterness, saying, "Korea is too lenient on diminished responsibility. It's the worst, the worst."
It was also reported that Kim Gil-tae's recorded statement at the time of the incident will be released for the first time, so the full broadcast of "Kkokkomu" will reveal what is contained in the audio file and the identity of the "dark great king" that Kim Gil-tae claims.
"Kkokkomu" is a program in which three "storytellers" study on their own and convey what they have felt to their individual "story friends" one-on-one in the most everyday settings, and it airs every Thursday at 10:20 p.m. on SBS.
