Actor Kim Soo-hyun outright denied allegations that he was romantically involved with the late Kim Sae-ron during his military service. The situation took a new turn as handwritten letters and diaries sent to an actual girlfriend were made public.
On the 30th, Ko Sang-rok, a lawyer at the law firm Phil handling Kim Soo-hyun's criminal case, emphasized, "If you look at the records Kim Soo-hyun left during his military service, there are numerous letters exchanged with a girlfriend," and "judging from the content, they are clearly writings of a different nature than those involving the late Kim Sae-ron."
After his assignment to a unit in 2018, Kim Soo-hyun wrote daily letter-style diary entries and shared and exchanged them with his girlfriend whenever he took leave. Among roughly 150 records were declarations of love and sentences imagining a future together. In one letter written in July 2018, he specifically imagined a future with his girlfriend after discharge, saying, "I will definitely travel with her around this time next year. I will do new things and things I have never done before, everything with her."
Ko said, "In letters to an actual girlfriend, expressions like 'I love you' and 'I miss you' appear, but the letters sent to the deceased contained only reflections on military life or comments about the weather," and "later, letters from different times were mixed together and distorted to appear as if they had dated during military service."
Ko also said, "The photos that the deceased posted on social media and then deleted were taken when she was a second-year university student in 2020, and some of the publicly circulated photos involved in the composite controversy were taken between late 2019 and spring 2020, after she was already an adult."
He said, "All the materials show that the relationship between Kim Soo-hyun and the deceased began in the summer of 2019 and ended the following year," and "a postcard written in November 2019 was also sent to the deceased as an adult and contained phrases commonly seen between people who had just started dating."
Earlier in May, a recording file was released claiming Kim Soo-hyun had dated the late Kim Sae-ron since middle school, triggering an uproar. In response, Kim Soo-hyun's agency Gold Medalist said it would take a tough stance, calling the recording a forged file manipulated with AI and other methods.
