After two years of dating, the couple Go Su-jin and Park So-hyun, who decided to marry, spoke candidly about their first meeting and how their romance began.
Game commentator "Kkokko-god" Go Su-jin and KBS announcer Park So-hyun, who will exchange vows on Dec. 14, met reporters for an interview at the OSEN building in Mapo-gu, Seoul, on the 25th ahead of their wedding.
The two grew close through their common interest in games, and after two years of dating they decided to become a married couple. They were introduced by KBS weathercaster Bae Hye-ji.
When asked about their first meeting, announcer Park So-hyun said, "I actually asked to be introduced. I like League of Legends, so I watch LCK often, and a handsome, neat-looking person appeared. I asked, 'Who is that?' and they said it was Kkokko. They said he had a good personality and was a fine person. I asked them to check if he had a girlfriend, and Hye-ji arranged the meeting," she said.
Recalling the time, Park So-hyun said with a laugh, "A one-on-one blind date would have been awkward. They suggested a group gathering, so Hye-ji, Kkokko oppa, some of my announcer friends, and Helios (analyst Shin Dong-jin), who works with him, met together. When we actually met, he didn't talk. I thought he wasn't interested in me, but he contacted me separately."
Commentator "Kkokko-god" Go Su-jin said, "At first I didn't go out with the expectation that things would go well with So-hyun. I just agreed to meet as a group, but the more I saw her, the nicer she seemed. She takes good care of people and listens closely. I'm not the type to talk a lot in groups. I asked for her contact and from that day we started chatting on KakaoTalk and talking," he explained.
Go Su-jin said he decided to confess on their second meeting. He said, "I came comfortably dressed the second time and she looked very pretty. We ended up talking for two hours in a shabby café and it was so enjoyable. I thought I should confess at the next meeting, so I did after watching a movie. I knew I could be rejected. Even so, because she was a good person, I felt I should try more."
Asked whether they dated with marriage in mind from the start, Go Su-jin said, "I didn't meet her thinking from the beginning that I would marry this person. Marriage was getting later, so I wasn't impatient. The more we met, the more certain I became that I wanted to marry her. At first I saw potential in her being very polite, courteous and considerate, but what made me like her more was how she cared for me, which moved me."
He added, "For example, I didn't have a Naver profile, so she pushed me to make one. She made business cards and profile photos for me. I thought she was someone who helped me develop at every step, so I felt I had to hold on to her. Also, when we lived together she cooked and her touch was really good. I thought I absolutely must not let her go. That was a big factor."
Go Su-jin said, "One of the things that made me want to marry her was that the more I saw her, the more I felt respect and admiration. She never slacks when preparing for work. So-hyun hosts 'Open Concert' and memorizes the script thoroughly. She said she hates looking down at notes while speaking. Watching that made me think she was amazing and gave me respect."
Park So-hyun said, "I don't remember a single moment when I thought, 'I must marry this person.' At some point, about a year into dating, I realized I'm not young. After thinking it over, I felt, 'Without this person my life would be too gray.' It wasn't that I had to marry because of one thing; I decided to marry because I felt I couldn't be without this person."
Park So-hyun added, "Work is one thing, but building a family was also a goal for me. I will maintain my career after marriage, but creating a family at a not-too-late time is also one of life's great joys."
Park So-hyun said there were no fights with her fiancé Go Su-jin during wedding preparations, saying, "We haven't fought before or after preparing for the wedding. Of course there have been moments of disappointment, but our opinions never clashed. When I asked, 'Can you do it this way?' he accepted. People say couples fight a lot during wedding preparations, but we didn't have that."
Born in 1990, Go Su-jin played as a professional 'League of Legends' gamer before retiring and becoming a commentator; he currently handles LCK broadcasts. As a former player-turned-commentator, he has earned fans' trust with professional analysis and explanations.
