"1.65 million YouTuber" Sang Hae-gi (real name Kwon Sang-hyeok) is under suspicion of drunk driving, and allegations have also been raised that this was not his first instance of drunk driving.
On the 23rd, the Seoul Songpa Police Station said it arrested a man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, on the spot on charges of refusing a breathalyzer test under the Road Traffic Act and is investigating him.
According to the police, Mr. A is accused of refusing several requests by officers to take a breathalyzer test after they responded to a report of suspected drunk driving while he was driving in the Gangnam District of Seoul at around 3:40 a.m. on the 21st. Ignoring police orders to stop, Mr. A parked his vehicle on a roadside in Songpa District and fled when the chase closed in, but he was soon caught at the scene. The investigation found that he repeatedly failed to comply with police requests to take a breathalyzer test.
Netizens, based on the fact that the suspect is a male YouTuber in his 30s with 1.65 million subscribers, speculated that Mr. A might be Sang Hae-gi. Sang Hae-gi is a YouTuber who presents various mukbang contents such as real sound and challenges. He served as a career soldier, was discharged, then worked as a trainer in Gangnam District, and despite doing mukbang videos he is noted for strict body management and a physique that is very good relative to the amount he eats.
Netizens said there is only one male YouTuber in his 30s with 1.65 million subscribers, Sang Hae-gi, and left comments on his social media account and YouTube channel demanding the truth or his position. Some netizens raised voices of criticism toward Sang Hae-gi.
Sang Hae-gi intensified suspicion by deleting his social media account without offering a clear position. In particular, because he continued to post the products he advertises on his social media account and upload new videos to his YouTube channel until this matter became known, his actions caused a deeper sense of betrayal. Netizens expressed their rejection of Sang Hae-gi by "unsubscribing," and 10,000 people "cut ties" in just one day.
Meanwhile, on the 24th, police said that Mr. A, who is accused of refusing a breathalyzer test under the Road Traffic Act, was found to have been previously punished for drunk driving. Under Article 148-2 of the Road Traffic Act, if a person is sentenced to a fine or higher and the sentence is finalized, drunk driving committed again within 10 years is subject to aggravated punishment.
Sang Hae-gi, who is suspected of drunk driving, has remained silent for two days after deleting his social media account. The police are investigating to determine Mr. A's level of alcohol consumption and the circumstances of the incident on the day it occurred.
