The drama Dear X features actress Kim Yoo-jung revealing her true face behind the mask.
On the 24th, the TVING original Dear X (written by Choi Ja-won and Ban Ji-woon, directed by Lee Eung-bok and Park So-hyun) released a teaser trailer showing the two faces of Baek A-jin (Kim Yoo-jung).
Dear X depicts Baek A-jin, a woman who wears a mask to escape hell and climb to the highest place, and the stories of the Xs she has brutally trampled. Attention is focused on the birth of a ruinous romantic suspense that captures the downfall of Korea's top actress Baek A-jin, who hides a cruel true nature behind a beautiful face, and the love of Yoon Jun-seo (played by Kim Young-dae), who chose hell to protect her.
In particular, it drew strong responses and was named a must-watch for the second half of the year after only parts 1 and 2 were shown at the 30th Busan International Film Festival. The project guarantees quality with legendary hitmaker director Lee Eung-bok, who directed Sweet Home, Mr. Sunshine, Goblin and Descendants of the Sun; the stylish and delicate director Park So-hyun; writer Choi Ja-won, who won the grand prize in the 2018 KBS one-act play script contest; and webtoon original author Ban Ji-woon.
The released teaser trailer captures Baek A-jin's harrowing life swinging between climax and despair. On the red carpet flooded with camera flashes, actress Baek A-jin in a glamorous dress draws attention with a haughty presence. As she says, "I want to be reborn at the highest peak," Baek A-jin puts on a mask and reaches the highest place. But the past and true self hidden behind the mask are unveiled, raising tension.
In her school days, Baek A-jin has a youthful face and an innocent expression, yet her eyes look somehow hollow and ravaged. The rumors surrounding her are also ominous. Slanders such as "pretending to be a model student in front, but behind the scenes leeching money off kids…" and criticisms like "acting pitiful when needed, that's all fake" and testimony calling her "a devil wearing a human mask" heighten curiosity.
Then Baek A-jin shows her true self with a poisonous, mad, grotesque laugh, saying, "How about it, do you want to kill me?" Her fate intertwined with Yoon Jun-seo and Kim Jae-oh (played by Kim Do-hoon) also draws attention. Baek A-jin's loaded line, "How far would you go for me?" makes Yoon Jun-seo's and Kim Jae-oh's choices even more intriguing. The final phrase, "May your ruin be my salvation," hints at the complex and subtle emotions and relationships between them and leaves a strong aftertaste.
Dear X is based on the popular webtoon of the same name with a global fandom, and news of the series production and the casting of Kim Yoo-jung as Baek A-jin sparked explosive reactions. Kim Yoo-jung transforms radically into Baek A-jin, a woman who wears a mask to survive. As a top actress who rose to the highest and most precarious place by stepping on the piled-up wounds of her childhood, she is skilled at piercing and manipulating others' hearts. Fans of both the original and the series are expected to be captivated by Kim Yoo-jung's performance as Baek A-jin. It will be released on TVING on Thursday, Nov. 6.
