Mukbang YouTuber Sanghaegi (real name Kwon Sang-hyeok) suddenly closed his social media accounts amid allegations of fleeing after drinking.
On the 23rd, the Seoul Songpa Police Station said it arrested a man in his 30s, identified as A, on the spot on suspicion of refusing a breathalyzer test under the Road Traffic Act and is investigating him.
According to the police, A was caught by police while driving under the influence on the morning of the 21st, but he refused the police's request for a breath test and attempted to flee, leading to his arrest on the spot.
Ignoring the police's order to stop, A parked his car by the roadside in Songpa District and fled when the pursuit closed in, but he was immediately caught at the scene. It was later found that he repeatedly refused the police's requests for a breath test.
In particular, identity checks revealed that A is a famous YouTuber with more than 1.65 million subscribers. After this fact became known, speculation about A's identity poured in, and based on the evidence that he was a male YouTuber in his 30s with 1.65 million subscribers, mukbang YouTuber Sanghaegi was identified.
As a result, Sanghaegi's social account was flooded with comments demanding an explanation about the alleged drunk driving and fleeing, and some netizens left harsh and mocking comments despite the allegations not being confirmed. There was also a surge of disappointment on his YouTube channel, and 10,000 subscribers were lost in a single day.
Amid this situation, Sanghaegi fueled suspicions by closing his social account, which had about 410,000 followers, without making any particular statement. Moreover, Sanghaegi had regularly uploaded YouTube videos every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday at 9:15 p.m., but no video was posted to his channel on the 23rd, when the controversy arose.
Sanghaegi is a YouTuber who presents a variety of mukbang content such as real sound and challenges. He began broadcasting on AfreecaTV in 2018 under the name 'BJ Hyuk-i' and has been active on YouTube since 2019. A former career soldier, he worked as a trainer in Gangnam District after his discharge, and despite being a mukbang YouTuber he drew attention for his meticulous physical management. He also participated in Seoul Fashion Week in 2019 and appeared on KBS2's The Manager to raise his profile.
