The Netflix debut of "Crime Scene Zero" returned with a daring premise.
The legendary role-playing mystery game in which players become suspects and detectives to find the culprit hiding among them, "Crime Scene Zero," released up to episode 4 on the 23rd. True to its title "Zero," from the first case it foregrounded the series' roots with the "abandoned hospital murder case" and the "funeral home murder case," where the players' back-and-forth chemistry exploded, perfectly quenching the thirst of fans who had been waiting for a new season of "Crime Scene." The more-evolved case structures, overwhelming immersion, and diverse fun that swings between laughter and tension heralded the prologue of the "legend" season.
Episodes 1–4 drew viewers in at once with intense scale and unpredictable plot twists. Above all, the players' performances stood out. Jang Jin read even the production team's intentions with sharp deductive skills, Park Ji-yoon led the progression of cases with seasoned play that moved between deduction and acting, Jang Dong-min added intense energy with his characteristically blunt speech and explosive reactions, and Kim Ji-hoon raised immersion with delicate emotional acting and a key role in the twists.
Ahn Yu-jin displayed the traits of a "clue hunter" from the first case, persistently digging into the incidents. Guest Park Sung-woong overwhelmed the scene with heavy charisma, heightening tension. Then Joo Hyun-young, who returned perfectly transformed as "Ju Myeoneul," kept raising the tension until the end, increasing immersion.
First, the series made a strong start with the first episode, "abandoned hospital murder case," in which "Jang Je-in," who went missing five years ago, was found dead on the outer wall of an abandoned hospital. "Detective Jang" Jang Jin took on the role of detective for the first case and launched into sharp inquiries. The suspects, who were entangled with the victim "Jang Je-in" by unclear pasts and secrets, also drew attention.
Players with suspicious behaviors engaged in fierce psychological warfare: "Director Park" Park Sung-woong, about to be inaugurated as the first village chief; "Cousin Jang" Jang Dong-min, the victim's cousin and owner of a mannequin factory; "Kim Minam" Kim Ji-hoon, who claims he was the victim's lover; "Dr. Ahn" Ahn Yu-jin, who introduces herself as the patients' savior; and "Shaman Park" Park Ji-yoon, who holds rites for a missing "younger sibling."
Then the discovery of a hidden sixth-floor space in the abandoned hospital, which no one even knew existed, pushed the case into a completely new phase. Amid heated arguments by players claiming innocence, a secondary landslide occurred, and confusion continued in the increasingly complicated case. Park Sung-woong, protesting his innocence with "I didn't kill them!!," added immersion with his trademark charisma, delivering dramatic tension.
In the second episode, "funeral home murder case," the players' chemistry stood out above all. "Ju Myeoneul" Joo Hyun-young clashed with "Mrs. Park" Park Ji-yoon at every turn, showing a bittersweet "antagonistic" chemistry, and the forbidden love surrounding "Kim Yeon-in" Kim Ji-hoon was revealed, taking the case into unpredictable territory.
Faced with an unbelievable, dramatic turn of events, "Jang's daughter" Jang Dong-min could not contain his anger, and with "Jang's son" Jang Jin, who had harbored solitary love, added into the mix, the number of people with motives for murder made deduction difficult. Added to this were subtle parody elements like "this is high praise," which elicited both immersion and laughter. "Detective Ahn" Ahn Yu-jin focused her deductions on the truth amid one twist after another.
Meanwhile, "Crime Scene Zero," which delivers thrills with upgraded scale and twisty narratives, will present new episodes every Tuesday: episodes 5–8 on Sep. 30 and episodes 9–10 on Oct. 7.
