Son Ye-jin said that she and Hyun Bin almost never have disagreements while raising their son as parents.
On the morning of the 23rd at a cafe in Sogyeok-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, an interview was held with Son Ye-jin, the lead actress of the film No Other Choice.
No Other Choice (director Park Chan-wook, distributed by CJ ENM, produced by Moho Film·CJ ENM Studios) depicts the story of Mansu (played by Lee Byung-hun), a salaried worker who had felt his life was so fulfilled that he thought it was "all achieved," who is suddenly fired and then prepares his own war toward re-employment to protect his wife Miri (played by Son Ye-jin), his two children, and the house he worked hard to acquire. Based on the novel "X" by American novelist Donald Westlake, it is a remake of Costa-Gavras's film Axe, a dangerous guide to employment. It was invited to the competition section of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival and selected as the opening film of the 30th Busan International Film Festival, and it has been officially invited to the 50th Toronto International Film Festival and the 63rd New York Film Festival, among others, drawing global attention.
Park Chan-wook's new work and Lee Byung-hun's passionate performance are attracting attention, but the fact that it is Son Ye-jin's comeback is also a topic. Son Ye-jin married fellow actor Hyun Bin, who is the same age, in 2022 and gave birth to a son in November of the same year. This is her first new work in three years, and she is returning to the screen seven years after Negotiation.
Son Ye-jin recalled the moment she was offered casting by director Park Chan-wook, saying, "Any mother wonders how long the period of giving birth and care should be. Commuting times are not exact, and once you join a project, actors tend to go all in. You lose mental leeway, and childcare runs 24 hours a day," adding, "I set a period of three years, and I really did my best. I devoted myself to childcare more than I could have. So I didn't feel an urgency to work quickly. I wondered, 'What kind of project will become my comeback?' That uncertainty and curiosity overlapped. I had many such thoughts."
She continued, "Living in a completely different world while doing childcare, I was so all in that I had no spare capacity. Later, when I read the script, this genre is not easy to encounter again, and it was a film by director Park Chan-wook," adding, "I considered whether I could be physically, materially, and temporally comfortable enough to shoot with peace of mind, and I used that as an advantage during filming."
Asked, "Do you and your husband Hyun Bin ever have disagreements while raising your child?" she said, "Mr. Bin always follows my opinion. Don't all households do that?" and added, "We have very similar values. So we don't clash much. We're not a couple who say, 'Why is this happening?' and fail to understand each other. Fortunately," she said with a smile.
