The agency representing actress Jeon Ji-hyun drew a line, calling unfounded the allegation that it faced a Chinese local advertising boycott over an anti-China controversy sparked by a line in the Disney+ series "Polaris."
On the morning of the 23rd, a representative for Jeon Ji-hyun told OSEN, "It is untrue that Jeon Ji-hyun's Chinese advertisements were canceled because of 'Polaris'."
The representative added, "The agency also communicated with the local Chinese agency and received an answer that it differs from the facts. Scheduled events and commercial shoots had been postponed transfer 'Polaris'. In the process of being postponed several times, the decision was ultimately made to cancel without extension. They cited local circumstances at the time as the reason," they explained.
Jeon Ji-hyun is currently appearing in the Disney+ original series "Polaris." In one scene, a line delivered by the character Seo Moon-joo, played by Jeon Ji-hyun, — "Why does China prefer war? A nuclear bomb could fall on the border area" — sparked strong backlash in China.
In connection with this, some Chinese internet users raised a boycott movement against Jeon Ji-hyun. As a result, allegations emerged that advertisements for products she models, such as cosmetics and watches, had been canceled.
"Polaris" is a spy-melodrama series in which Moon-joo (Jeon Ji-hyun), who built an international reputation as a U.N. ambassador, pursues the mastermind behind an attack on a presidential candidate and, together with Sanho (Gang Dong-won), a nationality-unknown special agent who must protect him, confronts a vast truth threatening the Korean Peninsula.
