Actors Ha Seung-ri, Park Eun-hye and Keum Bo-ra portray the turbulent daily lives of three generations.
The new KBS 1TV daily drama Mari and the Unusual Dads, set to premiere in October (directed by Seo Yong-soo / written by Kim Hong-joo / produced by LI Entertainment, Monster Union), is a drama about Mari's chaotic search for her father! It depicts the birth of an unusual family, blood thicker than water and more persistent than sperm.
As expectations grow for a unique family narrative surrounding the secret of birth, the Mari and the Unusual Dads side released family stills of Ha Seung-ri (as Kang Mari), Park Eun-hye (as Ju Sira) and Keum Bo-ra (as Yoon Soon-ae) on the 23rd (today), arousing curiosity about the story.
◆ On-again, off-again relationship between Mari and Sira
In the drama, Mari is the eldest daughter and only child who matured early because of her troublemaking family. Even amid constant incidents, she juggles school and part-time work and becomes a solid support for her mother Sira. Mari is clumsy in expression but loves her mother deeply. But for several years Mari has held a secret: since her parents' divorce when she was seven, she has been secretly contacting her father Kang Min-bo (played by Hwang Dong-joo). When it is revealed that Min-bo came to Korea to discuss Mari's study abroad, a rift forms between Sira and Mari. The situation grows more complicated as Mari becomes involved with school senior Lee Kang-se (played by Hyun-woo) and Sira becomes entangled with Kang-se's older brother Lee Pung-ju (played by Ryu Jin), drawing attention to the fate of the mother-daughter relationship.
◆ The reckless mother-daughter duo Sira and Soon-ae: a maddening or magical chemistry
Not only Mari and Sira but Sira and Soon-ae are also a mother and daughter living in the same house. Soon-ae is a witty talker who delivers sharp, piercing lines. She showers her divorced daughter Sira with blunt remarks, so they often bicker, but a pleasant chemistry emerges amid the clashes. Sometimes like friends, sometimes like sworn enemies, they bring joy whenever they are together, yet abnormal signs appear between them. The story that unfolds as Min-bo's return is revealed and Sira's large hidden secret comes to light will raise the drama's tension.
◆ Hate yet tender… the three women in Mari's household whose hearts are sincere toward each other
Sira and Soon-ae, feeling betrayed to learn that trusted Mari is in contact with Min-bo, are hurt in their desire to raise her without lack. As conflicts among people around Mari deepen, the three women end up wounding each other with harsh words and actions. Between fights and reconciliations, their story will show the image of a "real family" that draws viewers' empathy.
Directed by Seo Yong-soo and written by Kim Hong-joo, KBS 1TV's Mari and the Unusual Dads follows Catch Your Luck and premieres Monday, Oct. 13, at 8:30 p.m.
