"Home Alone" revealed that Key comes from a family of patriots, and it was especially poignant when it was disclosed that his birthday coincides with his grandmother's death anniversary.
On the 19th broadcast of MBC entertainment "Home Alone," Key shared an emotional family story.
On that day SHINee Key revealed that his paternal grandfather, paternal granduncle and maternal grandfather were all national patriots. Arriving at the National Yeongcheon Hoguukwon, Key said, "My paternal grandfather fought in the June 25th War," and added, "September is a meaningful month for me, so I came to visit my grandfather and grandmother after a long time."
Key said that following his paternal grandfather, his paternal granduncle who fought in the June 25th War and his maternal grandfather who fought in the Vietnam War are also at the Hoguukwon, surprising everyone.
After arranging the prepared food and greeting his grandparents in person for the first time in a while, Key sat comfortably in front of the gravestone and fell into memories. Key spoke about his grandparents, saying, "They treated me very lovingly," and added, "My parents both worked, so my grandparents would make sure I had a meal when I came home from school. I spent more time with them than with my parents." He recalled that he especially liked his grandmother's food, saying, "I remember growing up and going on many dates just the two of us, grandmother and me."
Key said, "September is my birthday, and unfortunately the death anniversary falls on the same day as my birthday," and recalled, "She died after I became an adult; my grandmother passed away suddenly without a chronic illness." He said, "For two to three years I was so depressed that I didn't even look at cakes," adding, "But one day I wondered if my grandmother would want me to be like that, so since then I revisit and recall happy memories on my birthday. September is a strange month for me."
When it started to rain, Key said, "Whenever it rains I think of my grandmother holding an umbrella at dismissal time," and shared the emotional thought, "She worried most about me getting wet in the rain; maybe it's raining now to tell me to hurry home."
Key of SHINee headed to his family home. After their outing, he was moved to receive a surprise birthday table prepared by his mother at the family home. Unable to take his eyes off the birthday spread full of his mother's love and care, Key was surprised to see one of the dishes he associated with his grandmother and asked, "Did Mom make this?" His mother, pleased by his surprised reaction, said, "Mom put in a bit of effort."
Earlier, to celebrate his mother's retirement, Key surprised her by recreating the nostalgic "soy-braised crab" using his grandmother's recipe. This time, to mark Key's birthday, his mother prepared the grandmother's dishes that he had liked since childhood. Key revealed in surprise that "it's still in the freezer," confessing that he had stored "that dish" his grandmother made for him before she died for 13 years without eating it, which astonished everyone.
At the end of the broadcast, Key said, "A birthday was nothing more than the day I was born, but from now on I'll spend birthdays with gratitude and use them to regroup," which moved viewers.
