Actor Kim Da-mi's first role as a mother in the upcoming Netflix film The Great Flood appeared at the Busan International Film Festival.
On the afternoon of the 19th, an outdoor stage greeting for the film The Great Flood (director Kim Byung-woo), invited to the 30th Busan International Film Festival, was held at the outdoor stage of the Busan Cinema Center. Actor Kim Da-mi and director Kim Byung-woo attended and introduced the work.
Director Kim Byung-woo said, "The title The Great Flood itself has meaning, and I thought it would be good to start the story with that. But the film doesn't end with just the impression of a great flood. There can also be variations of genre," adding, "Depending on how the theme of water is presented differently, The Great Flood can be interpreted with different meanings."
For this, Kim Da-mi spent most of the shoot wet. The director even avoided her eyes. Director Kim Byung-woo expressed regret, saying, "Even when not in the water, her hair and clothes always had to be wet. Living wet for months must have been uncomfortable and hard." Kim Da-mi herself joked, "Later I got used to it, so I would go to work in the morning and go in and out of the pool once. When I wore a coat, it got very heavy when wet."
Meanwhile, Kim Da-mi takes on a mother role in this work. She said, "I had never experienced being a mother or maternal love, so it was difficult. But I spent a lot of time with the child actor and tried to act like a mother and son on set." She added, "The child actor also worked very hard. It must have been really tough. It was probably cold too, and I want to say the role in the film is truly remarkable."
Director Kim Byung-woo emphasized, "At first I honestly didn't think about the actress's age. I thought it might be good if an actress around 40 did it. The child is about five or six years old. But when I thought about which actor would be better, I thought it would be much more accurate to have an actor who makes you question, 'Is she really a mother?' to portray the character."
He added, "Actor Kim Da-mi portrays completely different characters in each work so differently. While some people consistently keep a similar color, this person is like, where is she riding now? In the end, she has to express it through her acting. She gripped and expressed every little thing without missing anything."
Kim Da-mi said, "At first I thought it would be difficult. At first I couldn't imagine the script. I wondered if it could be realized. But I approached it with the mindset of accepting the challenge despite the difficulty."
The Great Flood is an SF disaster blockbuster depicting the last day of the earth struck by a great flood, and the struggle of those who stake humanity's final hope as they fight inside an apartment submerged in water. It will be released on Netflix on Dec. 19.
