Kim Jae-joong's father, after failing in business, entered a temple to recover from New Recruit, and Kim Jae-joong's mother, as the head of the household, became responsible for the livelihood of nine siblings. She thought that the fastest way to earn money was restaurant work, so she began working at the restaurant run by her sister-in-law.
At the restaurant they sold jokbal, barley rice, and sujebi, and she learned every menu item herself. Later, when her sister-in-law had health problems she entrusted the restaurant to her mother, and over time she inherited it.
Kim Jae-joong's mother said, "The restaurant was empty, but then the police station ordered a jokbal delivery, and I made kimchi pancakes as a freebie; the next day the investigation chief brought all his team," explaining that word of mouth turned it into a popular restaurant and it became a favorite of Gongju city officials. With monthly sales of 30 to 40 million won, she paid off 100 million won in debt within a year of running the restaurant. She repaid the family's debt with 100 million won, barley rice, jokbal, and kimchi pancakes.
Kim Jae-joong marveled, "Wow~ amazing, Mom," and his mother said, "Because of that, my body is completely worn out now."
Kim Jae-joong also said, "When they tore down the house we lived in and built a new two-story house, my father cried as he watched the house being demolished," and his father said, "They were tears of emotion," adding, "I really have nothing to say to my wife. I feel so guilty. That's why I always say this: if you, Yooman-soon, had not existed, Kim Bong-hyun would not exist in this world," expressing his gratitude.
