Actress Son Ye-jin shared her impressions of working with director Park Chan-wook on the film No Other Choice.
On the afternoon of the 18th, an open talk for the 30th Busan International Film Festival was held on the outdoor stage at Busan Cinema Center. At the event, actor Lee Byung-hun, Son Ye-jin, Park Hee-soon, Yom Hye-ran and Lee Sung-min from the No Other Choice (directed by Park Chan-wook) team attended with director Park Chan-wook to talk about the film.
No Other Choice tells the story of Mansu (Lee Byung-hun), an office worker who felt "I have achieved everything" and was suddenly fired, and who prepares his own war toward reemployment as he tries to protect his wife and two children and hold on to the house he struggled to acquire. The film is the new work of Korean cinema master Park Chan-wook and drew anticipation for the pairing of top actors Lee Byung-hun and Son Ye-jin.
Director Park Chan-wook is widely known to actors he has worked with as a tiger-like director. He drew particular attention for his detailed and precise acting direction. Among them, in No Other Choice only Lee Byung-hun had previously worked with director Park Chan-wook on Joint Security Area (JSA); the other actors worked with director Park Chan-wook for the first time.
Son Ye-jin said in this regard, "We didn't all meet (director Park Chan-wook). But after watching the senior actor (Lee Byung-hun) act, even a veteran who has worked for more than 30 years did everything the great director told him to do. For me, it felt like, if he asks, I'll do it. I sometimes wanted to rebel, but I couldn't. Someday, after working a few more years like the senior and meeting the director again, I'll try to muster the courage" and laughed.
Lee Byung-hun said, "Having experienced the director before, I knew how detailed he is and how many instructions he gives actors. Meeting him this time and working together again after a long time, those aspects became more subtle and intense. I inwardly laughed while feeling sorry, thinking he became more that way as he got older," adding to the laughter.
No Other Choice opens officially on the 24th. This year's Busan International Film Festival runs through the 26th around Busan Cinema Center.
