Actress Lee Young-ae mentioned the credit card crisis and confessed the weight she felt as an advertising model.
On the 17th broadcast of MBC's Questions from Son Seok-hee, actress Lee Young-ae appeared. She debuted as an advertising model and appeared in some 240 commercials over 17 years, establishing herself as the "CF queen."
That day Son Seok-hee referred to remarks by theater director Kim Sang-soo. Kim Sang-soo once said, "Lee Young-ae will know well that the image advertising shows and promises is not the truth." When Son Seok-hee asked, "Wouldn't that upset advertisers to hear?", Lee Young-ae calmly agreed, saying, "Yes."
When Son Seok-hee again asked, "Is it okay to say that as an advertising model?", Lee Young-ae answered honestly, "I think advertising models also appear as actors. Each advertisement has a concept and content, so I think you act according to that." She expressed her conviction: "You can't believe 100% of the world that advertising shows, but exaggeration should not go too far. It's important to set the line at a certain level."
Lee Young-ae admitted that advertising activities were a burden for her. She said, "Sometimes I didn't want to see my face on TV. So I reduced the number of ads," and added, "There were side effects from advertising." She then drew attention by mentioning the credit card crisis that shook the early 2000s.
At the time, reckless card issuance left millions of people with bad credit, and some took extreme measures. Lee Young-ae, who was a model for a card company at the time, said, "The problem of people with bad credit was socially very serious. There were many suicides, and as a model I felt a sense of responsibility," and confessed, "It was very shocking and painful. After that, there were ads I stopped by saying 'I'll quit.'"
Earlier she emphasized, "Seeing many people suffer made me think about the social role of a model. After that, when filming commercials I actively conveyed my opinions to advertisers." In fact, Lee Young-ae handed the card company model position to Jun Ji-hyun in 2003.
