Actor Lee El provoked laughter with comic acting that spared no embarrassment.
On the Sept. 15 episode of Genie TV original drama My Troublesome Star (directed by Choi Young-hoon, written by Park Ji-ha, planned by KT Studio Genie, produced by Jumbo Film), in episode 9 Lee El plays Go Hee-young (played by Lee El), who ends up working on the same project as the flamboyantly returned Bong Cheong-ja (played by Uhm Jung-hwa), producing unpredictable "sitcom-like" scenes that revealed another side of top star Go Hee-young.
First, at a press conference the moment Hee-young lost her balance and fell on stage due to a wardrobe malfunction drew attention. She confidently appeared in a designer dress conscious of Cheong-ja, but when all the spotlight shifted to the unrecognizably transformed Cheong-ja, her pent-up emotions exploded and she faced humiliation while drinking a beverage. Lee El elicited laughter with a fall performed without reservation and a flustered expression.
On set, the top star's posturing turned into comedy. Hee-young, overly conscious of Cheong-ja, appeared tense from head to toe, but when the set's attention focused only on Cheong-ja, her jealousy erupted. At Hee-young's command, a manager brought a large parasol and a fan, heightening the comic atmosphere. Her perfectly set hair instantly became disheveled, turning the set upside down, and her childlike inability to control her emotions and screaming reached the peak of "pathos + comedy."
Then Lee El, after crying in a scene, instantly switched her vocal tone at the director's cut call and asked, "Was that good?", using her eyes, breath and timing to create rhythm and complete the texture of "everyday comedy."
Hee-young also created a drinking occasion with Dok Go-cheol (Song Seung-heon) that heightened both laughter and misunderstanding. After immediately rejecting a scout offer with a high pay, provocative jokes and deliberate advances made under the influence of alcohol turned into a close-contact incident. The sight of a drunken Hee-young showed a cuteness not previously seen, bringing smiles to viewers. The cold stare of Cheong-ja, who witnessed a scene of supporting Hee-young, added to curiosity about future developments.
In this way, Lee El temporarily put down the haughty and elegant image of Go Hee-young and expanded the narrative of a spicy-but-lovable character by foregrounding human flaws and everyday, relatable humor.
Meanwhile, the Genie TV original drama My Troublesome Star airs on ENA at 10 p.m. every Monday and Tuesday, and is exclusively released as free VOD on KT Genie TV immediately after broadcast. The OTT is available on TVING.
