Domestic first live birth variety show, TV CHOSUN's Our baby is born again will reveal an unprecedentedly large-scale quadruplet birth scene in episode 1 of the regular season in which more than 20 medical staff were deployed.
The show, which premieres today (16th) at 10 p.m., TV CHOSUN's Our baby is born again (directed by Lee Seung-hoon and Kim Joon, written by Jang Ju-yeon) features a mother of quadruplets at 28 weeks pregnant who meets Park Su-hong, the Director General and head of the "birth correspondents." The mother, who is expected to deliver four babies weighing 1.1 kg, 1.2 kg, 1.0 kg and 900 g, said, "I received an injection for 'lung maturation.' It would help if the babies could breathe on their own because recovery would be faster and weight gain would be better, but I don't know how it will turn out, so that's my biggest concern," expressing the greatest worry about the babies' "spontaneous breathing."
The mother of the quadruplets went on to say she had previously been advised to have a "selective abortion." Obstetrician-gynecologist Kim Ji-yeon, who served as an adviser, explained, "Quadruplet pregnancy carries many and unpredictable complications such as preeclampsia, postpartum hemorrhage and preterm birth. Trying to save all four could result in losing all four. So, to protect the mother's health and maintain the pregnancy, intentionally terminating some of the fetuses is called a 'selective abortion.'" The "birth correspondents" lamented, "How could you choose this? It's so hard. The choice is too cruel."
The mother's husband tried to persuade his wife, worrying about the risk of uterine rupture and the possibility that all four babies could have problems. But the mother showed extraordinary maternal love, saying, "There are like five hearts inside me. It was so amazing and unbelievable that I was overwhelmed. I felt all four babies move, and I vowed to protect all four quadruplets no matter what." They ultimately decided to deliver all four, but the third fetus had a thickened nuchal translucency, raising the possibility of Down syndrome or chromosomal abnormalities. Moreover, since all four were expected to be born at around 1 kg, it was unpredictable whether they could breathe on their own, so concern continued.
On the day of the quadruplet mother's delivery, no baby cries were heard at the scene; only about 20 medical staff were seen moving busily.
