Netflix series Genie, Make A Wish foreshadows the birth of a character-rich hit.
Genie, Make A Wish, which will be released on Oct. 3 (Fri) ahead of Chuseok, is a stress-free fantasy romantic comedy about a career-interrupted lamp spirit genie (Kim Woo-bin) who wakes after more than a thousand years and meets an emotionless human, Ga-young (Suzy), and the three wishes they contest over. The naive genie who knows nothing of the world and the emotionless Ga-young's tense wish contest promises an outlandish story.
Above all, attention is focused on the wish-fulfillment lineup that excites viewers: Kim Woo-bin, Suzy, Ahn Eun-jin, Noh Sang-hyun, Go Kyu-pil and Lee Joo-young. The character stills released that day show the actors perfectly immersed in Genie, Make A Wish, raising expectations even more. First, the satan genie who appears before Ga-young raises the romance index with his neatly dressed appearance. But he soon emits a clumsy charm again. His solemn stance holding a carpet and a basin provokes laughter. His new owner, the psychopathic Ga-young, displays a beautiful yet brutal twist of charm. His "main job genius moment" as the owner of an auto repair shop also draws attention.
Meanwhile, the mysterious woman Miju (Ahn Eun-jin) who appears in Cheongpung village also stimulates interest. Miju, who said she came down from Seoul's Cheongdam-dong to live in the countryside for half a year, makes viewers curious about what episodes she will unfold in Cheongpung village. Also spotted was the suspicious building owner Su-hyun (Noh Sang-hyun) with a handsome appearance. His sharp eyes and immaculate appearance suggest his true identity is none other than the angel of death. Having lived countless lives with the genie, his long-standing relationship with the satan genie also raises curiosity.
Meanwhile, Seide (Go Kyu-pil) brings laughter simply by existing. Stealing attention with his cute suspenders, he is the all-purpose worker of Cheongpung village. But his habit of extracting information from mice is unmistakably satanic. As his true form is a jaguar, Seide, who can simultaneously interpret animals, raises curiosity about what feats he will perform. Also interesting is Min-ji (Lee Joo-young), the village dentist and Ga-young's only friend. What is the secret to the strong friendship between emotionless Ga-young and Min-ji, and their story also stimulates anticipation.
Armed with such fresh characters, Genie, Make A Wish plans to add fantasy to a realistic story to deliver delightful and heart-fluttering episodes. Writer Kim Eun-sook described Genie, Make A Wish as "an easy, fun, stress-free and sweet-potato-free, familiarly flavored fantasy romantic comedy that the whole family can watch together this Chuseok," and added, "The viewing point is the spear-and-shield-like duel, or bloodletting, or brawl with no inch of concession between the satan genie who begs, 'please make a wish,' and the psychopathic Ga-young who won't nurture wishes."
She added, "I recommend watching without any prior information about Genie's brother 'Su-hyun,' the 'mysterious woman (Miju),' and Ga-young's friend the dentist 'Min-ji.' You will enjoy discovering the clues scattered throughout the drama one by one as you watch, and the fun of predicting how their relationships will unfold."
