(Continued from interview 1) Director Yeon Sang-ho mentioned actress Shin Hyun-bin's passionate performance.
On the 15th at a café in Samcheong-dong, Seoul, an interview with Yeon Sang-ho, director of the film "Face," was conducted.
The film "Face" (screenwriter-director Yeon Sang-ho, produced and provided by Wowpoint (WOWPOINT), co-provided and distributed by Plus M Entertainment) tells the story of Im Dong-hwan (Park Jeong-min), the son of the seal-carving master Im Young-gyu (Kwon Hae-hyo / Park Jeong-min), a visually impaired craftsman called a living miracle, who, after the discovery of his mother's skeletal remains — once thought to have gone missing 40 years earlier — uncovers the truth behind her death.
In the film, Shin Hyun-bin plays the role of Jeong Young-hee, Im Young-gyu's wife and Im Dong-hwan's mother, who has never seen the faces of either of those two people, delivering a passionate performance.
When asked about the casting anecdotes, Director Yeon said, I casually mentioned to Shin Hyun-bin, 'If there were a role like this, who would take it~?' But instead, Hyun-bin said she was very open to doing experimental acting even if her face didn't appear. I immediately said then let's do it, he said, drawing laughter.
He continued, Actually, after that Hyun-bin thought about it a lot. We talked about angles, too. We discussed which area an angle would capture, and she said she would likely use her shoulders or hands a lot. We intended to shoot those parts, he recalled.
Also, Overall, what I felt while filming was that from the middle of the movie onward you almost forget that Young-hee's face doesn't appear. The emotions the character feels are conveyed. Maybe that's because the actor meticulously designed things like speech patterns, producing that effect, he said.
He added, Because the actors all worked well together. Jeong-min said early on that it would be good to express past scenes a bit more. Overall everyone had to express things similarly, and Hyun-bin also accepted that, so we matched awkward feelings and tones. Hyun-bin came after much thought. Since the voice would be the main expressive element, she seemed to have approached it conceptually, he said, expressing his gratitude.
