(Continuing from interview ②) Actor Park Jeong-min shared behind-the-scenes details about his acting in "Face."
On the 15th at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Seoul, an interview was conducted with actor Park Jeong-min about the film "Face."
The film "Face" (written and directed by Yeon Sang-ho, provided and produced by Wowpoint (WOWPOINT), co-provided and distributed by Plus M Entertainment) tells the story of Dong-hwan Im (Park Jeong-min), the son of blind seal engraving master Young-gyu Im (Kwon Hae-hyo/Park Jeong-min), who is called a living miracle, who, after discovering his mother's skeletal remains thought to have been missing for 40 years, uncovers the truth behind her death.
Park Jeong-min, who played both the son and the younger father in the film, recalled that he was first told the idea of playing two roles, saying, There were various reasons, but I thought it would be effective first of all. After receiving the offer, I actually couldn't remember the details, so I took out some comic books at home, and thought of senior actor Kwon Hae-hyo for the father role, since the young father appears a lot. I had a first-level judgment that if the son played this role, it might be interesting cinematically.
He added, And another thing was, if I had to choose one of the two, I wanted to play the young father. No one else had been cast yet. I thought, should I ask? Rather than saying I suggested it, I asked whether the young father actor had been decided. When I asked, the director said, 'I'm thinking about one actor playing two roles,' and it proceeded naturally, he joked.
About the process of character acting, he said, I really had no time to prepare. About two weeks. So instead of forcing it, I tried to make the feeling similar. The father is the younger days of senior actor Kwon Hae-hyo, so I thought he would move like this. He recalled, Senior Hae-hyo and I have different builds and faces. To become similar you have to go by feeling. Rather than planning, when I acted as the son I approached it as the person Park Jeong-min and put in personal aspects, and when acting as the father I had a lot of help—costumes, lenses, art, and acting with the seniors. Because there is a character, I relied on and leaned into the mood in each moment. That naturally allowed me to adjust, he said.
Park Jeong-min, who confessed that his father lost his sight and became visually impaired due to an accident, began by saying, While filming the movie, as always, I didn't really think much during the selection process. I didn't think of my father, but during preparation I did think about my father.
He said, When my father went somewhere I would offer him my elbow or talk about something. On the contrary, when playing the son those things were so familiar that they came out of me—ad-libs or doing something beside my father felt natural. Conversely, preparing for the father role, no matter how hard I worked, I wanted to show this to my father, but he couldn't see it. That felt strange emotionally. The sad stage had passed, but it became an opportunity to think about my father's life, he honestly confessed, drawing attention.
