"The Millionaire Next Door" takes an explosive look into the identity of Kang Woo-hyun, the "head" who built a 30,000-pyeong virtual republic in Jeju. It also reveals the surprising connection that he is an alumnus of the H University College of Fine Arts with Seo Jang-hoon's father, stirring excitement at the scene.
On the 17th (Wed) at 9:55 p.m., EBS's "Seo Jang-hoon's The Millionaire Next Door" (hereafter "The Millionaire Next Door") will air its first episode, finally ushering in the full season's glamorous opening night. The protagonist of the first episode is Kang Woo-hyun, the man who over 10 years built a "republic" on 30,000 pyeong of Jeju land, the size of 25 soccer fields. More precisely a theme park modeled on a virtual country, here he calls himself the "head." He even joked, "Building countries is my hobby," and mentioned another country he created, making viewers more curious about the "head's" worldview.
Meeting Seo Jang-hoon and Jang Ye-won, Kang Woo-hyun from his first appearance boasted an unusual air, saying, "When I got the booking call, I wondered why I'd go to something like that. I'm a 'ten-millionaire' who sells the sky; what is a 'millionaire'?" He then personally introduced the republic's symbol, the "sky lighthouse." The lighthouse carries the meaning that the 120 bulbs on it illuminate the "path to heaven" people go to when they die.
He divided that sky into 120 parts and sold each for 1,210,000 won, and recorded a sellout in just 20 days, earning revenue of 140 million won. When Seo Jang-hoon exclaimed, "Isn't this a modern-day Bong-i Kim Seon-dal?" Kang Woo-hyun fired back, "I'm more creative than Kim Seon-dal," turning the place into a sea of laughter.
Kang Woo-hyun also laid out his glamorous resume as a "20th-century top designer" who defined an era. From the Thumb-up Logo Bank, which everyone in Korea remembers, to the mascot of Gwacheon Land that sits in the memories of children from the '80s and '90s, they were all born from his fingertips. He boasted the prestige of being the era's highest-paid designer, saying, "At the time I received half an apartment's value as my fee." The site also revealed that Kang Woo-hyun and Seo Jang-hoon's father were alumni of H University College of Fine Arts and even majored in the same subject, startling everyone. Seo Jang-hoon's reaction, bursting with delight at the unexpected connection, will be another entertaining point of the broadcast.
