As the first anniversary of MBC weathercaster the late Oh Yo‑anna approaches, her older brother, Oh Sang‑min, appealed for interest in a memorial rally.
On the 13th, Oh Sang‑min wrote on his social media, "Sept. 15 is Yo‑anna's first anniversary."
He said, "Yo‑anna suffered greatly from workplace harassment and passed away. Currently our mother is conducting a hunger protest in front of MBC to urge a resolution to the issue." He added, "On Yo‑anna's first anniversary, please join us so that her death will not be in vain, so that the truth is revealed, and so that nonregular workers in the broadcasting media field no longer suffer."
The late Oh Yo‑anna joined MBC as a successful candidate weathercaster in 2021, but she died last September. The will that was made public immediately after her death contained accounts of her struggling with workplace harassment, which shocked the public.
MBC formed a fact‑finding committee and launched an investigation, and it terminated the contract of freelance weathercaster A, who was identified as the perpetrator. However, it signed renewals with other weathercasters who were also mentioned, sparking controversy.
Subsequently, the Ministry of Employment and Labor's special labor inspection concluded that "there were acts of harassment against the deceased," but it revealed a limitation that the workplace harassment provision under the Labor Standards Act could not be applied because the person was a freelancer.
Meanwhile, the late Oh Yo‑anna's mother has been carrying out a hunger protest in front of MBC's Sangam‑dong building in Seoul since the 8th.
