Master Ahn Yoo-sung recalled memories from when he first began learning to cook.
On the 14th episode of KBS2's Bosses' Ears Are Donkey Ears (hereinafter "Sadanggwi"), Master Ahn Yoo-sung was shown visiting his older sister's pension.
That day, Master Ahn brought his first disciple and Manager Hwang to visit his hometown Naju. He said, "My first disciple was so slow that I used a lot of store-bought products and got very angry. You can change through various experiences, so I thought it would be good for him to have various experiences today, so I came here." The person he met was his youngest sister, Ahn Sun-young, who runs a pension in their hometown Naju and is nine years younger than him.
Lee Soon-sil said, "She looks like a movie actress," and Jun Hyun-moo admired, "She looks a little like a North Korean movie actress." Park Myung-soo also praised, "She looks like teacher Kim Serena," while Ahn Sun-young called Master Ahn Yoo-sung "Ddol-i," drawing attention. Master Ahn explained, "Don't I look sharp? So since I was young people in the neighborhood called me clever, so they called me Ddol-i," but boos followed.
When asked why he came here, he revealed, "I came on purpose to help the disciple who has no work sense and Manager Hwal with the pension work." Kim Sook said, "I didn't know. Did you come secretly?" in surprise, and Master Ahn confessed, "I thought if I told them they wouldn't come, so I just brought them."
Afterwards, Ahn Sun-young introduced various parts of the house with a traditional feel. Master Ahn said, "If there's work, give it to me. These friends are all good. Bring everything you have or don't have. We'll help," and Ahn Sun-young requested, "Come to think of it, it would be nice if you could hang out the bedding."
After finishing the chores, Master Ahn took his first disciple and Manager Hwang and made kimchi. Master Ahn said, "We eat rice, but back then I was shocked by the fresh kimchi at Shin Representative's place. So today I want you to properly learn Master Ahn Yoo-sung's kimchi recipe," and he emphasized, "I'll pass everything on generously, so remember it well. You must watch closely. I'm revealing Ahn Gane's kimchi for the first time. I'll show you everything," but he drew criticism for not actually revealing the da-daegi ingredients.
After that, Master Ahn said, "I'll let you taste proper Naju beef bone soup," and cooked Naju gomtang, while Ahn Sun-young prepared a nine-course table including octopus blanch, potato pancake, pumpkin pancake, cold seaweed soup, and kimchi. Jun Hyun-moo admired, "This might be tastier than Master Ahn's restaurant," and Master Ahn also said, "This place is a real foodie spot," adding, "You set out so much; indeed, she's the master's sister."
Ahn Sun-young said, "It's hot, but you worked hard so I prepared this," and when asked about the origin of the nickname "Ddol-i," she said, "As far as I remember, my mother and father called him Ddol, so it stuck in their mouths until now," adding, "How mature he was: my father must have fallen asleep while smoking. Our family were outside talking and playing. But he went in and out of the room a few times and then called for my mother. He said the house was on fire. The whole family went and put it out and checked if father was okay. I remember that."
In particular, he shocked everyone by revealing, "Can I tell that story? When you went to Seoul you stole 10,000 won from my wallet." Kim Sook was appalled, "Did he have kleptomania?" and lawyer Kim Hee-jun said, "Back then 10,000 won was a lot of money.." Kim Sook asked, "Is that jail time?" and Park Myung-soo wondered, "Does stealing family money bring punishment?" Lawyer Kim Hee-jun candidly said, "Legally it's a crime, but the special exemption for relatives applies so it's not punished," and added, "Anyway the statute of limitations has passed," provoking laughter.
Master Ahn said, "I left home as if I was driven out to learn work, so the first thing I saw was my sister's wallet. It must have had more money, but I only took 10,000 won," he said. When asked about the family's reaction, Ahn Sun-young recalled, "We were very embarrassed. It was gone. After a while our mother called worried, asking if I was okay, and I said I was learning well at a Japanese restaurant. Then our mother dressed beautifully in a pretty hanbok and went to see the owner here. She went to Seoul. Seeing her child doing hard work was painful but also glad and proud, and she came down in a good mood."
Then Master Ahn said, "After I graduated high school and failed to get into college, I gave up cleanly and went up to Seoul determined to succeed through cooking. When I arrived at Seoul Station I had exactly 50 won left. I called someone I knew and went to their place. I went into a raw fish restaurant, ate and slept there," he explained. Ahn Sun-young also recalled the hard times, saying, "When I came to Naju and opened a restaurant, I always asked, 'Please co-sign the loan, brother-in-law.' Back then he always went and co-signed the loan."
When asked about the guaranteed amount, Ahn Sun-young said, "It wasn't just one or two cases; it must have been huge," and Master Ahn said, "I think it was about 50 million won. (When jajangmyeon cost 700 won) 50 million won could buy a house," expressing gratitude. Ahn Sun-young said, "He lived so hard, more than you would expect someone to live. That's how today's Ahn Yoo-sung came to be. No other words are needed. He's admirable. Nothing else comes out. Now he has neatly repaid all of my money," revealing that all guarantee relationships have been settled. Master Ahn expressed gratitude to his sister and brother-in-law for waiting such a long time, saying, "It took about 25 years," and Ahn Sun-young conveyed deep affection for her younger brother until the end, saying, "Please continue to help our Ddol-i a lot in the future. I'm asking you."
