Jeong Won-gwan of Sobangcha mentioned his past when he was engulfed in drug rumors.
On the 12th, on the YouTube channel "Song Seung-hwan's Wonderful Life," Sobangcha member Jeong Won-gwan grants an appearance and revealed stories from the group's days.
Sobangcha is a three-member male group that debuted in 1987 with "Last Night's Story," and can be considered an idol predecessor. Song Seung-hwan asked, "At that time there were male teams that stood and sang quietly, but wasn't it the first time in Korean pop history to have a team that sang so intensely like you?"
Jeong Won-gwan said, "There wasn't one before; we were the first. It must have been very novel. The reason I think our manager was amazing is that back then people around us viewed us very negatively. Suddenly we came out wearing shorts," and he added, "But still, it was through that manager's effort that we got in. At that time our agency was bigger than SM. They may have put us in as an option, but the person who made us like that played a big role. If not, we wouldn't have been able to wear what we wanted to wear."
Song Seung-hwan recalled, "When I was hosting 'March of Youth' at the time, in summer if you folded your suit and wore it, the Director General would come down and say, 'Song Seung-hwan, take that down.' Those were the times," He recalled. Jeong Won-gwan said, "How could we have worn shorts then?" and revealed an episode that was hard to laugh about, saying, "Even the drug task force once tailed us. They followed us thinking, 'These kids must be using drugs.' We learned because that investigator told us. He said they tailed us for two nights and three days. They kept following our car."
Jeong Won-gwan added, "Nowadays that wouldn't be acceptable, but when we were young we threw something out of the car while eating. The investigator kept picking it up. He picked up all that trash and (regarding drugs) nothing came out of it," and added, "That much, at the time it was shocking."
