MBC Friday-Saturday drama Mary Kills People (planned by Kwon Seong-chang, directed by Park Jun-woo, written by Lee Soo-ah) is a suspense drama about a doctor who helps the assisted deaths of terminal patients and the detective who pursues them. Mary Kills People features overwhelming performances by Lee Bo-young, Lee Min-ki and Kang Ki-young, offering food for thought on the social issues and meaning of assisted death and adding a weighty resonance.
In the 11th episode, Woo So-jung (played by Lee Bo-young) is shown three years after the conclusion of the phenobarbital murder case, revealing a change in her values. After confessing to Father Yang (played by Kwon Hae-hyo) about her moral confusion over assisted death, Woo So-jung chose volunteer work at Maria Welfare Hospital, saying "It's okay if I'm not forgiven," delivering a twist.
In the final episode to be broadcast on the 12th (Fri.) at 10 p.m., Lee Bo-young and Lee Min-ki are seen meeting again at Maria Welfare Hospital in a captured scene of a "subtle reunion" that draws attention. In the drama, Woo So-jung, who has become the head of Maria Welfare Hospital, and Ban Ji-hoon (played by Lee Min-ki), who has become a benefactor of the welfare hospital, face each other and talk. Woo So-jung, with the solid presence of a hospital director, smiles faintly and speaks to Ban Ji-hoon, and Ban Ji-hoon fixes his gaze on her with warm eyes. Questions grow about why Ban Ji-hoon, who had closed the investigation naming Choi Dae-hyun (played by Kang Ki-young) as the main suspect after worrying about Woo So-jung's danger, became a benefactor of the welfare hospital.
In particular, in the final episode of "Mary Kills People," actress Kim Young-ok, known as the nation's grandmother, and impressive character actress Kim Guk-hee make special appearances to decorate a splendid finale. Kim Young-ok, who has continuously worked for more than 60 years and established herself as a national actress representing Korea, appears as patient Kim Sun-joo, who is suffering extreme pain, and Kim Guk-hee appears as Kim Sun-joo's daughter Young-eun, delivering a heartrending aftertaste. Lee Min-ki, though a benefactor in status, densely embodied Ban Ji-hoon, whose lingering sense of duty as a detective and subtle feelings for Woo So-jung are intertwined, and he vividly portrayed the special ties with Kim Young-ok and Kim Guk-hee, driving the dramatic narrative.
