Netflix series "Genie, Make A Wish" previews Kim Woo-bin and Suzy's sweet and deadly romance.
Released on Oct. 3 (Fri) ahead of Chuseok, "Genie, Make A Wish" is a stress-free fantasy romantic comedy about a career-interrupted lamp spirit Genie (Kim Woo-bin) who awakens after more than a thousand years and meets an emotion-deficient human Ga-young (Suzy), sparking a contest over three wishes. The inexperienced Genie and the emotionless Ga-young's precarious wish duel promises an outrageous story. Above all, intense interest is focused on the reunion after nine years of the "romcom cheat codes" Kim Woo-bin and Suzy's pairing.
Meanwhile, images of Kim Woo-bin and Suzy perfectly transformed into Genie and Ga-young were revealed. The romance stills released that day capture the unexpected charms of Genie and Ga-young, drawing attention.
First, the lamp spirit "Satan Genie" leaves a strong impact with mysterious, charismatic eyes. But soon his new side is revealed. For some reason, Genie, fully armored in work pants, boots and a hip cushion, plops down on a field. Satan's force is nowhere to be seen, and his comedic appearance raises curiosity. Meanwhile, the strange and beautiful psychopathic Ga-young also boasts an unusual force. Emotionless Ga-young is simply beautiful even with a colorless expression, but soon gives a surprise twist by brandishing a kitchen knife in front of rice cake, offering an eccentric charm that stimulates curiosity.
When the uniquely present Genie and Ga-young meet like this, unexpected chemistry occurs. Even when Satan Genie appears exuding a spirit's aura, Ga-young remains undisturbed and focuses only on her breakfast. Satan Genie, who aims to corrupt humans with wishes, hovers around Ga-young, but somehow psychopathic Ga-young seems like an insurmountable wall. Yet in another photo a subtle romantic tension between the two is sensed, provoking excitement. Genie and Ga-young stand close enough to read each other's eyes. It makes one wonder what change has occurred in their relationship.
Kim Woo-bin, who promises a different look, introduced the lamp spirit Genie as "a character that's really hard to define in one word. He's energetic and tough and sometimes cruel, but also sometimes trivial and timid and occasionally cute, possessing a colorful charm." He added, "At first glance he seems human and acts like a person, but because he's a spirit, I wanted to create a slightly different feel in his behavior, speech, expressions, body shape and styling," explaining the focus of his portrayal of Genie.
Suzy, transformed into a romcom lead the likes of which we've never seen, said, "Ga-young is an emotion-deficient human who grew up in her grandmother's care and lives by her grandmother's drill-like 'rules' and 'routines.'" She explained the character: "She's not as kind as others and is more 'terrifying' than 'cute,' but because she lives by the rules, she ends up living more properly than anyone else." While playing Ga-young she said, "I tried not to feel emotions," and added, "Ga-young learned to pretend rather than empathize when others speak in front of her, so she's somewhat robotic, cold and mechanical. When reading the script I tried to approach it as much as possible with 'Ga-young's way of thinking.'"
Kim Woo-bin and Suzy's captivating fantasy romantic comedy "Genie, Make A Wish" will be released worldwide on Netflix on Oct. 3 (Fri).
