The leads of "Mari and the unusual dads" showed perfect chemistry from their first meeting.
The new KBS 1TV daytime drama "Mari and the unusual dads," directed by Seo Yong-soo and written by Kim Hong-joo, scheduled to premiere in October, is a drama about Mari's long search for her father! It depicts the birth of an unusual family whose bonds are deeper than blood and more persistent than sperm.
"Mari and the unusual dads" is a work that brought together director Seo Yong-soo, recognized for his delicate directing in Drama Special 2023 "Dohyeon's confession," "Overlap Knife, Knife," the weekend drama "Iron Family," and the epic historical drama "The Goryeo-Khitan War," and writer Kim Hong-joo, who showcased elegant writing in human dramas such as "I hate you but I love you" and "High school classmates."
At the script reading for "Mari and the unusual dads," held today (10th), the cast gathered in full, including Ha Seung-ri (as Kang Mari), Hyun-woo (as Lee Kang-se), Park Eun-hye (as Joo Si-ra), Ryu Jin (as Lee Poong-joo), Hwang Dong-joo (as Kang Min-bo), Gong Jung-hwan (as Jin Gi-sik), Jung Ae-ri (as Eom Gi-boon), Geum Bo-ra (as Yoon Soon-ae), Kang Shin-il (as Lee Ok-soon), Park Hyun-jung (as Moon Sook-hee), Jo Hyang-gi (as Yoon Eon-gyeong), Yoon Mi-hyang (as Kim Mi-kyung), Kim Young-jae (as Pyo Do-gi), and Lee Ji-yeon (as Ahn Soo-sun). The warm atmosphere at the script reading heightened expectations for "Mari and the unusual dads."
The actors drew attention for fully immersing themselves in their roles. Ha Seung-ri added credibility to the character of Mari, a girl who carries a complicated family burden, with realistic acting, and Hyun-woo infused the drama with bright energy by playing the warm man Kang-se. The two actors' performances, which naturally portrayed emotions shifting between awkward senior-junior dynamics, elicited both laughter and fluttering feelings.
Meanwhile, Park Eun-hye, Ryu Jin, Hwang Dong-joo and Gong Jung-hwan vividly portrayed the tangled relationships of the parent generation, adding tension and fun to the drama. Park Eun-hye, who plays Mari's mother Si-ra, heightened immersion with performances that showed wide emotional range, and Hwang Dong-joo, who transforms into Si-ra's ex-husband Min-bo, raised curiosity by showing an antagonistic chemistry as he bickers with Si-ra and Poong-joo. Ryu Jin, who plays Poong-joo, Kang-se's older brother, captured attention with his confident charm, and Gong Jung-hwan, who plays Gi-sik, Poong-joo's rival, lightened the set with his comedic performance.
Veteran actors such as Jung Ae-ri, Geum Bo-ra, Kang Shin-il, Park Hyun-jung, Jo Hyang-gi and Yoon Mi-hyang also stood out for their solid acting. Added to that was the energy of young talents like Kim Young-jae and Lee Ji-yeon, which sent anticipation for the premiere soaring. Laughter never stopped at the set thanks to the actors' passionate performances.
After the script reading, Ha Seung-ri said (Mari and the unusual dads) is a drama that truly unpacks the meaning of family, and Hyun-woo asked prospective viewers to watch a lot, saying it is a drama that is cheerful yet has many moving scenes and shows how each character grows.
Meanwhile, "Mari and the unusual dads" will premiere in October as the successor to "Catch Your Luck."
