Group ZEROBASEONE's Sung Hanbin faced criticism for a thoughtless remark that imitated a woman's moan, and he immediately reflected by posting a second apology. While most reactions expressed disappointment that his remark differed from his usual image, some voices said that since he posted an apology and showed contrition, excessive criticism should be restrained.
On Sept. 6, the YouTube channel "Kkondaehee" featured ZEROBASEONE's Sung Hanbin and Seok Matthew, who appeared and talked.
That day Seok Matthew said, "Hanbin hyung always has a neat image, but whenever we drive and go over a speed bump he makes a strange sound," and Sung Hanbin explained, "If you go over a speed bump hard, doesn't your butt hurt? In those moments we have a meme we use among ourselves."
Sung Hanbin said, "To make the kids laugh, when we go over a speed bump hard it's 'eueut,'" and added, "Since Kkondaehee is here I'll try it once. I've let go." He expressed the word they say when going over a speed bump as "yami."
After the video was released, fans criticized that Sung Hanbin's action was an expression of a woman's moan, and Sung Hanbin immediately wrote on the fan communication platform Bubble, "Agh... I overdid it on Kkondaehee. There was no such intent, and I was too eager for entertainment content."
He continued, "If there were any ZEROZ who felt uncomfortable, I sincerely apologize. I'm sorry. Let's try to improve your way with words Sung Hanbin," apologizing to fans and showing remorse.
However, some people dug up past videos of Sung Hanbin and criticized him, and as the controversy grew, Sung Hanbin posted a second apology on the fan communication platform.
He said, "I sincerely apologize for causing discomfort with my careless words and actions in the Kkondaehee video released on Sept. 6. It took me some time to collect my thoughts and speak after going through this incident. During that time I thought a lot about how much more carefully I need to speak and act and what kind of person I should become in the future."
He added, "At that time I was nervous and used an imprudent expression without thinking deeply. There was absolutely no intent, but I realized that my shortcomings and ignorance could cause hurt, and I feel nothing but shame and apology," and bowed his head, "I once again apologize to ZEROZ and everyone who felt uncomfortable because of my shortcomings."
He went on, "I will use this incident as an opportunity to move forward with more responsibility and maturity," adding, "I will sincerely learn and work hard so I do not cause disappointment, and I will show through my actions that I have changed. Once again, I sincerely apologize."
Although criticism continues that the disappointing behavior in the video contrasted with the upright image Sung Hanbin has usually shown, some say his acknowledgment of the criticism and responsible apology should also be recognized. Since he expressed his own apology, it is necessary to watch how he changes and grows going forward.
