The TVING drama Dear X apologized over allegations of poster similarity.
On the 9th, Dear X's side told OSEN, "In the case of the launching poster, we belatedly recognized the similarity to a specific reference, immediately stopped using it and decided not to use it in the future," delivering an official position.
Dear X depicts the story of Baek A-jin (Kim Yoo-jung), a woman who wears a mask to escape hell and climb to the highest place, and the Xs who were brutally trampled by her. It heralds the birth of a destructive melodrama suspense that is both the downfall of Korea's top actress Baek A-jin, who hides a cruel true nature behind a beautiful face, and the desperate love of Yoon Joon-seo (Kim Young-dae), who chose hell to protect her.
On the 8th, Dear X released the poster through official social media. On pure white paper, the words "Dear X" are written in red, and through a tear in the shape of an X peeking through is the intense gaze of Kim Yoo-jung, who passionately played the lead role of Baek A-jin.
However, after the release, various online communities began pointing out that the poster resembled the poster of the Chinese film "The Devotion of Suspect X."
The Chinese film "The Devotion of Suspect X" is an adaptation of Keigo Higashino's novel of the same name and was released in 2017. It starred Wang Kai, Zhang Rui and Lin Xinru, and at the time was a well-known work that won awards such as best picture and best actor.
In fact, that poster also featured white paper, a tear in the shape of an X, and even the intense gaze of the lead actor seen through the gap, resembling the Dear X poster.
Ultimately, when controversy arose, Dear X deleted the post that had posted the poster and bowed, saying, "We sincerely apologize for causing discomfort by not carefully reviewing the production process," and, "We will take care to prevent similar incidents from recurring through a thorough inspection process."
Meanwhile, Dear X will premiere on TVING in Nov.
