Park Chan-wook's new film 'No Other Choice' went home empty-handed at the Venice International Film Festival.
On the 6th (local time) at the closing ceremony of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival held at the Sala Grande at the Palazzo del Cinema in Lido, Venice, the winners of the competitive institutional sector were announced, but 'No Other Choice' regrettably did not win any awards.
Jim Jarmusch's 'Father Mother Sister Brother' won the top prize, the Golden Lion, while the Jury Prize went to 'Hinde Rajab's Voice' by Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania. The Best Director award went to Benny Safdie for 'Smashing Machine.'
Previously, 'No Other Choice' was invited to compete at the Venice International Film Festival, 13 years after Kim Ki-duk's 'Pietà', and following its world premiere, it received a wave of praise from major foreign press, raising expectations for an award. However, it could not lift the trophy.
Park Chan-wook reportedly told local reporters right after the closing ceremony, "I feel like I've already received a big award because the audience's reaction is better than any film I've made."
Additionally, 'No Other Choice' has been selected as Korea's representative submission for the International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards, challenging for another Oscar win following 'Parasite.'
Meanwhile, 'No Other Choice' tells the story of a company employee, 'Mansoo' (Lee Byung-hun), who, feeling satisfied with life enough to think "I have achieved everything," is suddenly fired. To protect his wife and two children and to keep the house he worked hard to acquire, he prepares for his own war towards reemployment. The film is set to be released on the 24th.
