The Mantis: Original Sin, starring Ko Hyun-jung and Jang Dong-yoon, has begun its collaboration.
The first broadcast of the new SBS Friday-Saturday drama "The Mantis: Original Sin" (hereafter referred to as "The Mantis") on the 5th depicted the collaboration between Jung Yi-shin (played by Ko Hyun-jung) and Cha Soo-yeol (played by Jang Dong-yoon).
In that day's broadcast, a mimicking murder case identical to the 'Mantis' murder case that occurred 23 years ago took place. Choi Joong-ho (played by Jo Sung-ha) sought out his son Cha Soo-yeol to prevent this, saying, "Jung Yi-shin has agreed to help with this case. But she wants to talk only through you."
Cha Soo-yeol angrily replied, "Are you crazy, sir? What did you just say? Who do you want me to meet?" But Choi Joong-ho insisted, "If we don't catch him now, more victims will continue to come out. We need to act before something happens."
Eventually promising to keep it a secret, Cha Soo-yeol reunited with his mother Jung Yi-shin after 23 years. When Jung Yi-shin greeted him warmly, Cha Soo-yeol said, "I'm Detective Cha Soo-yeol from the Violent Crimes Investigation Unit."
When Jung Yi-shin asked, "It seems you are married since you have a ring mark. Do you have children?" Cha Soo-yeol replied, "Let's skip the personal talk. I'm not here for a family reunion; have you seen the file?"
Jung Yi-shin looked at the case journal and said, "He's trying to do it just like me, but it's a bit different. I use a saw. When the blade goes in sideways into a person's neck, the body shakes. This one seems to not know that kind of fun. If it's an axe, it must be a man," she explained. Still suspicious, Cha Soo-yeol provoked, "You seemed to be smiling while looking at the photos. Maybe that's fun for you? It brings back memories and smells like blood."
In response, Jung Yi-shin said, "Is the smell of blood bad? They said you have to turn it upside down to cut open my belly. During the surgery, I suddenly woke up from anesthesia. I endured it, worried that if I moved, something might go wrong with you. It felt like someone was rummaging through my belly with gloved hands. And that's how you were born. I like the smell of blood. It's the scent that came when you were born into this world."
Hearing this, Cha Soo-yeol chuckled and said, "I see. But what can I do? I meet numerous criminals, but I'm a police officer who's not particularly interested in their lives and memories. It seems you, Ms. Jung Yi-shin, particularly like the smell of blood."
Amidst the peculiar tension, Jung Yi-shin asked, "Can I see the crime scene? I have something that came to mind and I want to check it out."
Cha Soo-yeol expressed his anger to Choi Joong-ho, saying, "Whether it's 23 years or 230 years, it doesn't change. Taking advantage of our position of need while enjoying all the benefits of the system is just a trick to buy time." Nonetheless, Choi Joong-ho displayed a firm stance, stating, "I just need to catch the criminal, whatever it takes."
Afterward, the two were taken to the crime scene at the request of Jung Yi-shin. As Jung Yi-shin looked around the crime scene, she smiled, recalling her past self. She said, "I could have severed the neck in one go, but I deliberately didn't. I felt like pulling this out slowly."
She then hinted, "If the criminal wanted to mimic the 23-year-old case, what would he have used as a reference? It must be the content and photos reported by the media. There was only one newspaper that published photos of the scene."
As Cha Soo-yeol pressed her, Jung Yi-shin replied, "That's a matter for the police to figure out; I'm a criminal. You're the police, and weren't we in that kind of relationship?" Ultimately, Cha Soo-yeol discovered a clue through the photos in that newspaper based on Jung Yi-shin's words.
Jung Yi-shin smiled meaningfully at Cha Soo-yeol, enhancing the immersion in the unfolding drama.
