It has been four years since the late Kwon Soon-wook, the older brother of singer BoA and a music video director, passed away.
Director Kwon Soon-wook died at the age of 39 after battling peritoneal cancer on Sept. 5, 2021, at 12:17 a.m. At that time, his sister BoA personally announced the news on social media, leaving a short but deeply sorrowful message that read, 'Brother Soon-wook has gone to heaven.'
Kwon Soon-wook revealed his stage IV peritoneal cancer diagnosis in May 2020, sharing news of his battle. He said at that time, 'Hospitals say the expected lifespan is around 2 to 3 months,' adding, 'I couldn't eat for over two months due to bowel obstruction, and my weight has dropped to 36 kg,' which pained many hearts. He also expressed frustration and complex feelings after hearing doctors say it was 'an incurable disease.'
BoA stayed by her brother's side until the end, expressing her affectionate feelings. She publicly supported and encouraged him, saying, 'I love you, brother. We can overcome this. I will definitely make ramen for you. We have to eat together.'
However, the illness ultimately took Kwon Soon-wook, and BoA left a tearful message saying, 'Thank you for being my brother and best friend, Soon-wook. I'm grateful you were born as my brother. Our last conversation was 'I love you,' and thank you for leaving me those warm words.'
At that time, to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the funeral was quietly held with only close family and relatives in attendance, and the deceased was laid to rest in the cemetery in Yeoju.
