UMSILRYEON has joined the International Music Artists Rights Alliance.
On the 4th, the Korea Music Performers Association (Chairman Lee Jung-hyun, hereinafter 'UMSILRYEON') announced that it has joined the International Music Artists Rights Alliance (IMARA) as a founding member. Through this membership, UMSILRYEON plans to expand and protect the rights of domestic music performers on a global level, commensurate with the international status of Korean music, including K-pop.
IMARA was established in February 2025 in Barcelona, Spain, to enhance the rights of music performers in music and audio-visual content worldwide. Its main objectives include establishing a fair compensation system on digital streaming platforms, protecting performers' rights in audio-visual works, and preparing legal and institutional measures to protect performers' rights in light of advancements in AI technology.
Through this IMARA membership, UMSILRYEON has secured a leading position and established a foundation to represent the rights of Korean music performers internationally. Notably, Korea and Japan are participating as representative founding members in the Asia region, expected to play a central role in international cooperation. Since IMARA only allows organizations that consist exclusively of music performers as members, this aligns with UMSILRYEON's identity and is projected to promote consistent policies while preventing conflicts of interest with other rights holders by focusing solely on performers' rights.
Additionally, through IMARA, it has become possible to collaborate with overseas organizations to share advanced cases related to performers' rights protection and conduct joint research. This is anticipated to establish a basis for making rational decisions in policy formulation based on discussions on the latest industry trends and key issues, and to serve as benchmarking material when establishing similar regional consultative bodies in the future.
A UMSILRYEON official noted, "Joining IMARA will be an important opportunity to protect and enhance the rights of Korean music performers on a global level," adding, "We will work to solve the problems faced by domestic and international music performers and contribute to ensuring fairness in the global music industry through IMARA's activities."
The first general meeting of IMARA is scheduled to be held on October 3, 2025, in the coastal city of Anavissos, Greece, where UMSILRYEON plans to participate as a founding member and be involved in establishing action plans for major fields of activity. This general meeting is expected to discuss specific implementation measures, including protections for music performers' rights in light of advancements in AI technology.
