Director Byun Young-joo of 'The Mantis: Original Sin' clarified the differences between the Netflix film of the same name.
On the afternoon of the 4th, a production presentation for the SBS Friday-Saturday drama 'The Mantis: Original Sin' took place. The presentation was attended by Director Byun Young-joo, actors Ko Hyun-jung, Jang Dong-yoon, Cho Sung-ha, and Lee El.
'The Mantis: Original Sin' is a high-density crime thriller set 20 years after the brutal serial killer 'The Mantis' was caught, when copycat crimes occur, and a detective, who has harbored hatred towards 'The Mantis,' joins forces with his mother, who is unexpectedly 'The Mantis,' to solve the case.
In particular, on the 26th, the Netflix film 'The Mantis,' starring actor Yim Siwan, will be released. In relation to this, when asked about the differences between the two works, Director Byun Young-joo joked, "The movie 'The Mantis' is about a killer who kills people for money, but our Mantis kills because he enjoys it without receiving anything."
He noted about the serial killer Jung Yi-shin, portrayed by Ko Hyun-jung, that "Our drama 'The Mantis: Original Sin' features a serial killer who kills abusers from 23 years ago in the same way that they abused children or committed violence against women. Even though it's unclear why copycat crimes occur 23 years later, it's someone who thinks they can help solve the mystery of those copycat crimes."
He added, "The movie 'The Mantis' features a good-looking, cool killer who fights with people in an action thriller, while we are a mystery thriller," and he humorously stated, "If you have the time while watching our show live, please watch the movie as well."
Given that we feature a criminal as the main character, there are concerns about glamorization. He explained, "If the director shows favor towards the criminal protagonist, viewers may find that disgusting. Even in earlier works like 'Hwachae,' when the protagonist elicited sympathy from the director, I thought the audience would find it repugnant. We are not supporting him; rather, by showing her, we allow viewers to make their own judgments as they are. "
He also highlighted that "The protagonist who needs to be supported in this drama is the character Cha Su-yeol (played by Jang Dong-yoon). Rather, Jung Yi-shin is the character who embodies the cruelty of the past meeting the present. (There are individuals who idolize the cruel murderer), which means there are those with a particular taste who idolize Jung Yi-shin."
