Former announcer Kang Mi-jeong, the spokesperson for the Rebuilding Korea Party, has stepped down from her spokesperson position, revealing incidents of sexual harassment and bullying within the party.
On the 4th, Kang stated during a press conference at the National Assembly's communication hall in Yeouido, Seoul, "Although I remained unwavering in my clear goal of judicial reform, what I faced along the way was sexual harassment and bullying from those I believed to be comrades," adding, "I sincerely hope that this voice today will become a beginning to break another silence."
He continued, "One of the victims of sexual harassment and bullying within the party left last month," noting that "the chairperson of the Sejong City chapter, who called for reform related to this incident, was expelled on Sept. 1. Three other operating committee members also received disciplinary actions. A supporter who aided the victim received a disciplinary action for 'violation of the dignity of party officials' and recently submitted a resignation letter, and another victim is currently preparing to resign right now."
"This is the reason I have no choice but to break the silence and stand here today," emphasized Kang, stating, "The party has ignored the cries of the victims. The ethics committee and personnel committee were filled with individuals close to the perpetrators, and the demand for an external investigation body has not been accepted for over a month." She claimed, "In the meantime, the victims are leaving the party. This is why I have become certain that I can no longer wait and that I have no choice but to leave."
Earlier, a party official belonging to the Rebuilding Korea Party reported being sexually harassed by a superior to the police. The party is known to have isolated the accused party official from the victim and excluded them from duty.
Spokesperson Kang Mi-jeong is also well known as a broadcaster with an announcer background. She gained recognition through the announcer audition segment "New Employee" on the MBC entertainment program "Our Night" in 2011, and has since hosted various programs such as MBC's "Live Morning Today," KBS's "Good Morning Korea," and Defense FM's "Pleasant Military Life." Continuing her broadcasting activities, she entered politics and has been serving as the spokesperson for the Rebuilding Korea Party.
