'Ten million actor' Hwang Jung-min has returned to the musical stage. He has chosen the musical 'Mrs. Doubtfire,' which is known for its extreme difficulty, hinting at a different transformation.
On Feb. 2 at 2 p.m., a press conference for the musical 'Mrs. Doubtfire' was held at Ewha Womans University Samsung Hall, featuring Hwang Jung-min and Jeong Seong-hwa in the roles of Daniel and Doubtfire, along with Lina as Miranda and Kim Tae-hee and Seol Ga-eun as Lydia, as well as Lee Ji-hoon and Kim Da-hyun as Stuart who graced the occasion.
'Mrs. Doubtfire' tells the story of a dad, Daniel, who, after a divorce, disguises himself as a nanny to get closer to his children. During its domestic premiere in 2022, it received standing ovations for every performance, along with the Producer Award and Makeup Design Award at the 7th Korea Musical Awards, proving both its artistic value and commercial viability.
Hwang Jung-min has returned in this season after three years, joining anew. He noted, "I saw Jeong Seong-hwa's performance last season. I thought, I want to do that role too; it's so charming and wonderful. The story of this work, about love, is something all families can watch together. I was hesitant, but I got to do it again."
The role of Daniel and Mrs. Doubtfire requires 20 quick changes and clever dialogue, along with singing and rap, making it a challenge that only a true multi-player can handle. For Hwang Jung-min, who declared his return to musicals after 10 years since 'O, Keppy,' this is no easy task. However, he has built a broad acting spectrum across films, dramas, and theater, so greater expectations are mounting.
He further expressed, "I produced and directed the 'O, Keppy' musical, and after experiencing poor results, I thought that I shouldn't do musicals anymore. Regardless of whether it's a musical or a play, stage performances are the same. I was pleased with the intent and theme of this work, as several generations can communicate together. I loved it," he said with a smile.
As he said, whether in front of the camera or on stage, Hwang Jung-min was undeniably himself. Lee Ji-hoon, who plays Stuart, remarked, "It's a real honor to see Hwang Jung-min's raw acting in the practice room. Just seeing that performance in the practice room, which I saw on screen, is so appreciative. To have the chance to see Hwang Jung-min's drag performance is very new and exciting every day," raising anticipation.
Hwang Jung-min said, "It's difficult to switch from making a 19-plus movie to comedy. Acting comedy with pathos is hard. I lost my touch from not doing it. Since Jeong Seong-hwa and Jeong Sang-hoon are so good, I just mimic them while watching, realizing I'm not just an actor who curses but am diligently working hard," he clenched his fists.
In addition to Hwang Jung-min, 'career actor' Jeong Seong-hwa, who joined again this season, and Jeong Sang-hoon, who built his comedy skills through 'SNL Korea,' offer a delightful viewing experience as Daniel. The 'Mrs. Doubtfire' musical will welcome audiences from Sept. 27 to Dec. 7 at the Charlotte Theater, Korea's first musical-dedicated venue.
