MBN '2025 King of Singers Competition' MC Shin Dong-yup shared his special thoughts and key viewing points from this unique 'world's only Korea-Japan music competition' recording.
The MBN '2025 King of Singers Competition,' which will air on the night of the 2nd at 9:50 p.m., commemorates the 60th anniversary of the Korea-Japan diplomatic relations. It is a unique 'world's only Korea-Japan music competition' where the TOP7 of 'King of Singers Japan,' produced by CREA Studio, and the TOP7 of 'King of Singers' from Korea face off with pride representing their nations. In particular, the '2025 King of Singers Competition' is expected to showcase a thrilling matchup, as Korea aims for a consecutive victory after last year's win, while Japan seeks to overturn the atmosphere with a triumphant comeback.
Q1. You have hosted in almost every genre including variety shows, music, and awards. Is there a special tension or charm you only feel when hosting the 'King of Singers Competition'?
Since it's a recording with Korean and Japanese singers together with judges from both countries, Japanese and Korean can be heard simultaneously in the studio, which keeps me in a constant state of tension as a host. However, it may just be my impression, but since this is my second year, I feel as though I can understand the comments and actions of the Japanese singers a bit more than last year.
And this season, I wanted to respond immediately to what the Japanese participants were saying, so I wore a separate interpretation earpiece while hosting. It's more challenging than ordinary recordings, but once we finish recording, I feel a great sense of accomplishment, as if I've completed a significant task.
Q2. The '2025 King of Singers Competition' features a contest between male singers from Korea and Japan. What differences did you feel compared to last season, which involved female singers?
The common sentiment among the athletes from both countries is, 'We can't lose even at rock-paper-scissors in the Korea-Japan battle.' Compared to the female singers, the male singers this time showed a much stronger competitive spirit. Especially since Korea won last year, the Korean TOP7 is determined to secure a second consecutive win, while the Japanese team is very motivated to win back this year. With tight psychological warfare on both sides, when a singer loses, they blame themselves, cry, and exhibit a vivid competition filled with determination. Additionally, this year's 'King of Singers Competition' features surprisingly shocking national team members who showcase contrasting performances. I found myself amazed throughout and thought it was truly a remarkable lineup.
Q3. Was there a moment during the recording when your heart raced as an MC and a scene that gave you goosebumps?
There were moments when I was surprised by the songs sung by the singers from both countries. As it is a national competition, it was evident everyone had put a lot of effort into preparing their performances. Many unknown J-pop masterpieces were revealed, and the harmonies and stage productions from the Japanese singers were refreshing. Korean singers also attempted transformations different from their usual styles, preparing many innovative performances. It was enjoyable without any dull moments while hosting.
Among the Japanese TOP7, there was a well-known vocalist who had enough of a following in Korea to tour there, leading to a fantastic scene where both Korean and Japanese audiences stood up and enjoyed the performance, cheering exuberantly. Additionally, even I, who have hosted many competitions, was shocked by a performer whose short hair confused audiences into asking, 'Is it a boy or a girl?' Their mysterious contrasting vocal style delivered yet another surprise. Fans who have been waiting for the 'King of Singers Competition' can look forward to it.
Q4. The '2025 King of Singers Competition' is planned in a symbolic year marking the 60th anniversary of Korea-Japan diplomatic relations. What significance do you see in this stage as a host?
When I first hosted last year, I was somewhat skeptical, wondering, 'Is a 'music Korea-Japan battle' really possible?' Moreover, I was curious and somewhat worried about how the public would react to Japanese music being aired on Korean broadcasts. However, through the year since the 'King of Singers Competition,' I have felt a tremendous change among Korea and Japan's music fans. It seems people appreciate it not only as a rivalry between the two countries but also as an opportunity to enjoy famous songs from both nations.
I've also heard that the '2025 King of Singers Competition' will be aired in Japan as well. I believe this will introduce excellent singers to audiences in both countries, and through the strong unity and fair play of male singers from both nations, we can confirm the true meaning of cultural exchange.
Q5. Finally, if you have any viewing points for the '2025 King of Singers Competition' or messages you would like to convey to the viewers, what would they be?
It was impressive to see the Korean and Japanese audience members who came to support their singers end up admiring the performances of the opposing country's singers. I believe viewers from Korea and Japan will likely find new favorite stars. The production team has also made the rules and hosting style of the competition much more intense based on last year's experience, and the song selections have been refined even more, resulting in a series of performances that are a feast for the eyes and ears. Personally, after completing the recording for the final battle, I thought, 'Wow, this is amazing.'
The production team noted, 'Shin Dong-yup has demonstrated his recognized veteran MC skills, resonating and encouraging participants from both Korea and Japan at the 'King of Singers Competition.' Please look forward to Shin Dong-yup's hosting, which will showcase his flair among the fiery participants from both countries, starting from the first broadcast of the preliminary round.'
